Success has be defined as the accomplishment of an aim, goal or purpose. The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them; ‘ Jim Rohn’ The ‘how’ to own this success is however what has been a nightmare to Many. Kaizen, a Japanese philosophy, which means, continuous improvement, elaborates vividly how success can be easily achieved through personal improvement.

Religiously following the Kaizen principals has a positive impact and is a bold step towards accomplishing your dreams, be it at work, be it in a business enterprise, everywhere. Please do.

Principe 1 – Throw out all your old fixed ideas on how to do things; why wait? Personal improvement sounds extremely fantastic, in theory. So does reading a book every week waking up early or doing exercise. But until you actually take the step to do these things – read the first chapter, waking up at the sound of an alarm or choosing to walk over using a bodaboda – the two lines, that for wishing to achieve your life dreams and that for actually getting them will forever remain parallel, never to meet. Simply put, the gap between the plan and the reality gets wider. Do you really know the secret of achieving your plans, just start. Its not too early nor too late to start working on those ideas. Your ideas are not small, don’t despise them, neither too complex to be achieved. The person who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones, Shelby Skrhark. Start and start small, but have the big picture in mind. The slight edge, the compound effect,—these small steps are how success really happens. Work hard to get 1% better everyday. Tiny gains yield big results.

Principle 2 – No blame – treat others as you want to be treated; Do you remember the “no blame, no excuses” culture? If you set your mind-set is that you’re at least 90% responsible for your success—and that just 10% is fate dependent—you’ll likely be successful. Blaming your failures, losses and problems—big or small, personal or professional—on other people, circumstances beyond your control, or just plain bad luck, you may be doomed to fail. Every day, we meet and interact with fellow human beings, be nice to them, treat your neighbour well. Matt:7.12- “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you”- it’s the Golden rule. I call it the law of reprocity. Need no say more.

Kaizen principle 3 – Think positive—don’t say can’t – Positive thinking is an attitude that pushes you to expect good and desired results. Power of positivity helps you in creating and transforming energy into reality. My rugby coach used to tell us, approach every game with a positive mind and with a winning mentality. Positive mind-set helps you to seek happiness, health and a happy ending regardless of the situation.

Kaizen Principle 4 – Don’t wait for perfection. 50% improvement now is fine; You will agree with me that perfection is on everybody’s mind. Once I will switch my current job, I will pursue my dream. Once I will earn this much, I will start my business. Once I will have more time, I will start going to the gym. Once I will have fewer responsibilities, I will start enjoying my life. We are all waiting for that perfect time and situation to start doing something. That’s where we go wrong. Success takes time. Things get better with time and its key to start as soon as possible.

Kaizen principle 5 – Correct mistakes as soon as they are found; Great friends, success always start with failure. Success comes through rapidly fixing our mistakes. Mistakes and failure are inevitable, no matter who you are, the key is to get better at recovering from it rather than trying to avoid it altogether. But the question is, how long does is it take you to fix your current and past mistakes. Kaizen advocates one to address mistakes immediately rather than wait. Correcting mistakes ASAP help us turn the mistakes into genuine learning opportunities. Let’s not fear mistakes, its part of success.

Kaizen principle 6 – Don’t substitute money for thinking—creativity before capital; I recently spoke with Nihal Shah, managing director of Coninx Industries, a manufacturing Co. that produces pvc horse pipes designed to give customers best experience when it comes to making water flow. This MD didn’t rely on investor capital, Nihal and his brothers relied on creative problem solving (and a little bit of personal sacrifice) to get their business off the ground. Now, 25 years later, they are a growing, manufacturing company supplying their products in east afrcia. No further explanation needed —before you spend money, think first; before you beg for resources, use your creativity first.

Kaizen principle 7 – Keep asking why until you get to the root cause.- The fear of asking a question, that fear of how others will perceive once you ask about something; that fear is the greatest inhibitor to your success. Ask! Ask! Ask! “Question everything. Learn something. Answer nothing.” – Euripedes.

Kaizen Principle 8 – Better the wisdom of 5 people that then the expertise of 1 –two heads are better than one- the phrase goes. While walking the path of success, seeking a second opinion becomes essential rather than depending solely on one’s ideas. ‘ if you want to walk fast, walk alone, if you want to go far, but if you want to go far, walk together – Ratan Tata. As much as I appreciate individual talent, I personally attribute ‘sweet’ success to working in a team. Do you want to celebrate alone or in your group? Take the advise of your friends, your mentors, make it rare to rely only on your expertise all along.

Kaizen Principle 9 – Base decisions on data not opinions; Without data, we rely on guesswork. For a lot of entrepreneurs, their decisions are driven by their gut instincts, not by data. It’s fine to rely on instinct when your company’s just getting off the ground, and its core agenda is being conceptualised. In the long run however, such an approach narrows your horizons and compromises your ability to spot potential market opportunities. Intuition without evidence is flawed. Why then depend on data? Irregardless of the level of success you want to achieve, data is paramount. Data opens your mind to a new world of innovation, it equips you with better information to precisely make targets. It enables you know what is exactly required to succeed in something, unlike opinions which are rather biased.

Kaizen principle 10 – Improvement is not made from a conference room -Proverbs 14;23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Success is an offspring of day to day improvements. Improvements however cannot be realized by just sitting down. We ought to be men of action to reach the success we wish. Positive action accompanied by positive thinking leads to success. Nothing happens until something moves.
