Sexual Harassment is a subject that had been getting more and more attention over the years. “The 1990’s brought great amounts of attention to sexual harassment and noticed it as one of America’s ongoing struggles. The media was filled with public scandals and overwhelmed with these issues coming forward all at once. The legislature then gave the public the Civil Rights Act of 1991. This act helped expand sexual harassment policies and also help educate the public on criminal matters happening in America. Even with these preoccupations the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commision has not seen any decline in sexual harassment disturbances.
One of the main problems you see now with sexual harassment is that some people may have an idea of what sexual harassment is but very few actually know what it is. Some may even use that as an excuse to get out of trouble when they are accused of sexual harassment. Another issue with sexual harassment is that sexual harassment subverts the mission and the work of the college and can threaten the career, educational experience, and well-being of students, faculty, and staff. There is also an over abundance of sexual assaults and harassments campus wide. It is illegal to harass someone just because of their sex. This can encompass verbal or physical harassments which includes any types of sexual nature. This can also include offensive gestures about a person’s sex. Both parts of sexual harassment can vary by sex. The harasser and victim can be either male or female and also subsequently the same sex as well. The law does not exile teasing or crude sexual comments but harassment is illegal when it’s deliberately severe and frequent. This creates a hostile environment for the worker and harasser and reduces the space for clear, mindful work ethics.
On average, 1 in 6 women, and 1 in 33 men are sexually harassed in their lifetime. These ratios are increasingly growing and can be steadily higher on college campuses. Not only can female sexual harassment ratios be high, but male ratios are rising higher and higher each year; especially in bigger cities. Gender differences seem to be more confrontational than they were made out to be in the past. Some studies were done by the United States Merit Systems Protection Board (USMSPB) regarding men’s experiences with sexual harassment related topics. A portion of this data was found to be that generally, both genders undoubtedly experience sexual harassment situations. Research says that women have fallen victim to the superiority of men and are not objectified by each other; this topic publicized in popular culture and modern films. Fact is, that sometimes people can sexually materialize people of the same gender to feel inferior and dominant. This is something that can happen in the workplace and many times everyday classrooms.
