Tolerance is described as an attitude that recognizes the right of others to think, live, or worship according to their own beliefs. Tolerance is especially needed today in society, where people of different backgrounds, cultures, and religions live together. Today’s world has become very multicultural and full of diversity, so tolerance will be needed to maintain peace and unity. Tolerance helps people feel more welcomed and feel like they belong no matter what their religion or race is. Tolerance helps people to see other perspectives and live in love and harmony. It also helps people to learn how to be respectful and accepting of other cultures, especially in a society full of diversity we are more prone to have people who lack the ability to respect and accept others. Lack of tolerance leads to violence, prejudice, and fighting particularly when people lose an argument, they feel the need to use force and aggression to bring about their point of view.
The problem is not that people are being intolerant by nature, because while God created us, he put love and humility in our hearts, but the problem comes from those who choose to remain ignorant about what is going on in the world around them. For example, tolerance is very important in religion because how people worship is a very deep and personal thing and for someone to bash or insult a person’s religion can cause very heated arguments, if there was more tolerance around there would be fewer arguments about whose religion is right. Which is why we need to enforce the importance of tolerance in today’s society. An example of being tolerant is disagreeing with someone but honoring and respecting their ideas and treating them with dignity. Canada is known as one of the world’s most diverse and peaceful country. One-way Canadians are able to live in peace with each other is because we have tolerance embedded in our country. In Canadian society we practice tolerance by developing the multiculturalism act which preserves and enhances multiculturalism in Canada. If we continue to enforce the importance of tolerance around the world people will be able to live in unity and peace while respecting and accepting others.
