They also study the environment of the area before the construction to measure the danger of natural disasters. Civil engineering is a career I have chosen.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest fields of the engineering.

It is also in high demand today. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field is believed to grow up to 19% by 2020. It is a very large field with many specialties include structural engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, and environmental engineering...I am looking forward at structural and environmental engineering.

How to become a civil engineer? Civil engineering education started long before you entering college, it started with your math and science classes in high school.

According to some civil engineers I know, mathematics and science are the key point for civil engineering. They are a part of civil engineer’s daily work. A civil engineer also needs leadership skills, teamwork skills, critical thinking, visualization, and communication skills. To become a civil engineer, you have to complete 4 to 5 year university program with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and four years of applicable work experience, plus you must receive a Professional Engineer’s License (PE) to provide service to the public.

Structural engineers are very similar with architects, they design buildings and bridges.

Loads are the biggest concern of structural engineers. The weight of a building or bridge itself is called dead load (never change). Another type of load is live load, the weight of what will be placed on or in a building or bridge. An example of live load on a bridge will be the vehicles or railroad traffic that the bridge can carry. Structural engineers also have to deal with lateral loads caused by wind. To make sure skyscrapers won’t collapse because of the strong wind, they have to design skyscrapers that can allow the wind to pass around the building from any angle, not hitting the building directly. Structural engineers don’t work alone, they work with all of the other civil engineering specialties to get the job done.

Environmental engineering is the civil engineering specialty of looking for ways to protect and improve the natural environment, reducing and repairing damage which human has caused to the environment. Environmental Engineering is one of the fastest growing job fields today. According to the Bureau of Labor, they are expecting environmental engineering positions will grow 31% for the next 10 years.

Civil engineering is a career field that interests me. It has great impact and help improves the quality of our life today. As the technological revolution expands, the world's population is growing, the world will need a lot of civil engineering skills. The average annual salary for all civil engineers was $84,140 as of May 2012, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and it in high demand so I won’t have a hard time dealing with finance in the future. That's the good side of it, with great salaries come with great responsibility. The civil engineers’ job is extremely stressful and you have to work over 40 hours a week. Just one little mistake or poor designed can lead to the loss of million dollar structure or many lives.
