The main concern people have today while living in America’s society, is that almost everyone has eaten fast food due to the inexpensive and succulent foods being sold. Whether it is down the road from someone’s house or inside every mall, there is a fast food restaurant waiting to sell people greasy but delicious foods. Granted most of these fast food restaurants show people their caloric intake, they do not tell them that type-2 diabetes occurs because of the fats, sugars, and salts they are consuming. Since most fast food industries have reasonably priced foods, people tend to buy more of their products, which then lead to developing type-2 diabetes.
Is eating all of this fast food dangerous? Type-2 diabetes occurs when a person’s body refuses to take in insulin. Many sources also say that this chronic disease can be passed through genetics, weight gaining, and laziness. In addition to these three factors, diabetes could be deadly if not treated correctly. Although this disease has not found a cure yet, there are ways to manage the condition; such as healthier eating, exorcising, even trying to maintain a healthy weight. The main thing is to maintain the sugar levels in a person’s body, but this all starts with the person. They can choose to live healthier or they can choose to continue with the way they live their lives. Some cases, children are born with this disease but they can still fight it. Although they do have a choice, money plays a major role in some cases.
Lately people are saying that you have a choice when it comes to eating healthier, however most sources say that it’s no coincidence that our food system leans towards the bad calories than the good calories. On top of having diabetes, people could have heart disease, stroke, cancer, loss of sight, etc. Some even say, “it’s his or her own poor decisions” (Mello). However, according to Food Inc. the movie, our mind is craving three specific things: salt, fat, and sugar (41:12). For example, Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream from Baskin Robins – just hearing it sounds good, and according to Witherly, a member of the AAAS and a leading expert in the field of food science, nutrition, and product formulations says that it’s our mind that makes our senses think a certain way, and it’s not our fault, it’s the factories. They are the ones who look for that “perfect combination of salt, fat, and sugar” that makes people pick up a chocolate bar occasionally (Witherly).
“You could choose to eat healthier,” is what some may say. Nevertheless, fast food or unhealthy food is cheaper, it’s easier to find, it fills you up faster than healthy foods, and it’s more accessible for most people. According to the family on Food Inc. they said, “we either pay for meds to be healthy or buy vegetables to be healthy.” Saying that, medicine is more important for the father than to buy healthier foods for their family. In their case, it’s choosing life or eating healthier. Most people would choose to live and that’s all they can do with their living wages that are provided for the family.
Further going, I feel that fast food companies are purposefully targeting low to middle-income families because these fast food companies know that the upper-class families can afford to pay for healthier foods, while low and middle-class are on a budget. Personally, my family and I are in this situation. We turn to fast food every time we have a long or hard working day. I myself turn to fast food because I don’t have time to go home, cook a meal, and get ready for school. Its easier and faster to just go to the drive-thru and order a quick meal. Along with that, McDonald’s companies have now created a dinner box. This is a fast and fulfilling meal targeting most families.
Inside the advertised Dinner Box from McDonald’s, there are 2 Big Mac’s, 4 medium French fries, 10 piece Chicken McNuggets, and 2 regular cheeseburgers. This box is supposed to fill up an entire family and the cost is only $9.99. When I was doing my own research, I found that when walking into a local supermarket like Sack N’ Save, an entire meal for one day is more expensive than the Dinner Box from McDonald’s. Like most grocery store that sells produce, it costs more than $9.99 to fill up a family of four. With the new dinner box available, families have the accessibility for cheap and fast meals for dinner. According to Allan Smith, the author of “How McDonald ‘s Plans to Profit From Its $9.99 Dinner Box”, McDonald’s may lose profits but they don’t care because all they want are customers walking through the door, buying their food (para. 2).
In addition, a source collaborates with their (the family from Food Inc.) story – The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) states that the cost for a meal at home for a family of two is around six hundred dollars a week, and for a family of four it’s around a thousand dollars a week (Official). The Dinner box shows people how desperate our fast food industries are becoming, and how manipulative these industries can be. In the ad I chose, they are targeting families with low income, they are targeting people that are low or middle-class, and lastly they could be targeting people who already have diabetes.
In Conclusion, I think that all food industries should put glass walls around their factories so that maybe we would have a better food system (Food, Inc.). Another solution is to minimize the amount of bad calories that fast food restaurants have and put in more healthier options; not just salads. Even though eating healthy seems to be expensive, there are alternate ways to living healthier and eating better. One solution is to create a garden with the fruits or vegetables that you like. This way you don’t have to spend as much money at the grocery store for healthier foods. Another solution is exorcising and drinking water. Altogether, I feel that there are many decisions to make when minimizing or eliminating these types of diseases. Communities can come together to help those less fortunate than others by creating community gardens, free for everyone. There are so many ways to for healthier living habits but somewhere it all starts with yourself and the decisions you choose to make.
