Which Government?

As John Adams once said, “Democracy… while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy. Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.” After reading this, it got the brain running… John Adams wouldn’t just say this for any reason. Perhaps, maybe he saw flaws in our American government system that many people aren’t able to see. Following John Adams quote left us to one question. Is democracy really the best form of government worldwide? In this essay, I will be listing 4 governments, and speak on what makes each of them beneficial to their economy.

Democracy

What is better to begin with other than the worldwide known government by the name of Democracy. Democracy, by definition, is described as a political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections. Having elections for who the people want as a leader promotes change. This change Is usually a healthy change because it gives the people the opportunity to say what they want. Although it’s not always a non-violent change, typically since the overall decision on who they vote for comes from a majority decision, people understand that it was a fair vote. In a democracy, one of the governments responsibilities is to “protect the interests of its citizens”. It gives the citizens the right to vote on political, social, and economical issues in their country. This gives the citizens a voice to say who they want to lead their country to success. In a democracy, something that is “promoted greatly is equality”. Democracy is based off the rule of equality, which means all people are treated equally upon the law. In every single way people are treated equally as of gender, race, religion, class, and even property. In our government, everyone is started from the same spot and equally have a chance to rise up in our economy.

Last but not least, a democracy “prevents monopoly of authority”. Since a democracy is bound by an election term that makes parties compete to regain authority, it completely eliminates the idea of someone having complete power forever. All positions of power have terms which allows for different people to have a chance to take control of situations whether it’s for as big as our nation, or as little an elementary student council.

Monarchy

Next on the list, we have a Monarchy. A monarchy is defined as a government having a hereditary chief of state with life tenure and powers varying from nominal to absolute. In a monarchy, what is really “brought about is a solid government”. Since monarchies have one single person in power, it provides the people with a focused area for group loyalty and identity. A lot of the people who serve the king/ queen most likely have watched the child grow to become the ruler that they have become. Unlike in other governments, it’s not just random people filling positions and not knowing each other.

Monarchies are closely tied in so loyalty is definitely a major factor in this government. Since there is one individual that makes decisions for the people, the decisions are made faster due to the fact that there would be fewer arguments in regard to the outcome of a situation. This personally saves a lot of time for the kingdom, and allows them to get things done in a more efficient time. In a Monarchy, more money is saved for the government strictly because they don’t waste money on huge elections like other forms of government tend to do. This money that is saved from not having elections can easily be invested into other things that can better the economy and result in a happier country, such as school, healthcare, building houses for poor and more.

Lastly, in monarchies, “leadership suitability” is encouraged. From the day the child is born, they are raised and taught accordingly on how to run their country properly. It’s almost as if they were actually born to lead. This results in the child growing up, having the knowledge of how to rule the country since as young as he/she can remember, and typically running the country like a true ruler would.

Communism

Moving forward we have communism. Communism is known as a political ideology that believes that societies can achieve full social equality by eliminating private property. In communism, the main priority is to embody equality. Everyone in communism is equal and no one is left alone due to the fact that there are no social class systems present. “Everyone gets the same chance” when it comes to success. There aren’t any inherent household benefits, or any types of existing wealth that give people any type of advantage over one another. The only thing you can become better than people is in your own talents and gifts.

Communism somewhat moves the economic value to people’s talent and skills value, it can teach one how to value one’s self traits over money. The government controls all of the money flow to guarantee that no one receives more than another. Along with that, communism “makes health care, education and employment accessible to citizens” of their country. In this ideology, even the poorest people are allowed to equally receive a chance to educated and treat themselves. Anyone who has a will to stay healthy and become educated can easily receive it. Unlike other countries where you have to be a certain class to receive better treatment or more education, communism focuses on letting everyone have a fresh start. “Almost everyone is employed and educated “ when it comes to communism. Along with what was mentioned earlier, no job or role is better than the other which enforces the idea that equality is key in their society. The goal of their society is to improve, and by doing these things, they have improved a lot. “According to the world bank, more than 500 million people were lifted out of poverty and the rate fell from 88 percent in 1981 to 6.5 percent in 2012’’. Considering that almost half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day, seeing these numbers in communism is quite outstanding. Something else that stands out in communism is the fact that “it does not allow business monopolies”.

Just like the property, communism also completely controls the businesses and allots the money to be spent for production costs. Business competition doesn’t exist because manufacturers can only produce limited number of goods and can’t price their goods higher than others. Limiting each manufactures goods prevents companies from taking one another over. In every aspect, communism does not let anyone thrive higher than another strictly due to its equality ideology. This all ties into how overall communism strictly lays on the equality of each member in its society.

Dictatorship

Lastly, we have a dictatorship. A dictatorship is a government or social situation where one person makes all the rules and decisions without input from anyone else. To begin with, “dictatorships have a deterrent effect on crime”. In 2016-2017 the Philippines recorded that violent crimes decreased dramatically. It went from 158,000 to just under 80,00 in the span of 1 year. This resulted in a reduction of theft and more crimes. Dictatorships may not completely dissolve crime in their economy, but the amount of crime that have dropped in some countries shows that dictators are getting the job done. Whatever disciplinary actions that dictatorships take must stand out loud enough to the people to deter them away from committing crime. Something else that stands out in this type of government is that “opposition is rarely permitted”. In other forms of government, citizens tend to revolt and cause chaos among the country simply because of something they don’t agree with, causing damage to multiple things.

In a dictatorship, opposition isn’t usually permitted so anyone who tries to is met with force, up to and even death warrants. Most people don’t want to die so any type of opposition is usually demolished due to fear. Even though fear isn’t the best way to guide a country, if it can bring chaos and opposition to a minimum, perhaps it isn’t such a bad solution. Dictatorships can also “provide effective response during emergency situations”. If the dictator decrees than an action should be taken, then it gets done. This can be very beneficial due to the fact that they go through less layers of approval. If any disaster/ emergency happens in the country, all it takes is for the leader to make one decision. This leads to faster results and possibly even the safety of its people in a best-case scenario.

Lastly, with a dictatorship, “political corruption is more likely to be taken out the equation”. Since a dictator answers to no one but themselves, corruption in the government system is often reduced because there’s no need for it. Workers in the government typically fear the repercussions of being corrupt so there is almost little to no corruption. Majority of dictatorships seem to be ran strictly by fear, but even with so, dictatorships still seem to get things done.

In conclusion, every single one of these governments have their reasons why they believe that their economy is better. When it comes to running the country, there is a reason why each of them are still lasting until today. There are governments who don’t care about the people at all but keep the economy still moving, there are those that believe in equality amongst all, and there are even those that let the people decide how the nation moves forward. They all have their good sides and some even their bad sides. When it comes to how you want your country is ran, if you were to choose to live in one of these governments, which would it be? Which form of government would benefit you and maybe even your family the most?
