Anorexia is a psychological disorder as the person suffering from this disorder has a warped body image and believe they look much heavier that what they actually are. The erroneous way people see themselves in the mirror often leads to self-starvation. People battling with Anorexia let their self-worth become completely defined by the way they think they look.

On occasion, some people may develop Anorexia due to a traumatic event/happening that took place. Often the trauma was something that was out of their control. Some may become fixated on their weight as a result of not knowing how to appropriately deal with, or express their emotions. Patients feel that because one aspect of their life is out of control, their entire life is too. These thoughts lead to patients realizing that one thing they can control is their weight.

Absolutely anyone is at risk of becoming Anorexic at any stage of their life. It is estimated that approximately 90% of people with this eating disorder are women aged between 15 and 25 years of age. However, recent studies have shown that the number of men suffering from Anorexia is on the rise. Many a time, some people may develop Anorexia due to a traumatic event/happening that took place. Sometimes people, mainly children, get bullied, teased or even receive negative comments about their weight causing them to have a stigma about their weight. The thought that thinner is better is emphasized greatly by the public as well as by social media.

This disorder greatly affects people economically and socially. From a social aspect, sufferers often lead an isolated life. They become very weak and lack energy due to malnutrition. Thus, impairing them from going out, having fun and building relationships and friendships. Another point of view is that often sufferers have this idea that they are “fat” and feel ashamed of their body-image Economically, Anorexic people tend to lose their jobs due to absenteeism and not being able to do the work required of them. They lose their income and fall behind on all payments.

Eating disorders need to be treated in order for the patient to get healthy again. Medical bills. health advisory and psychologists are very expensive and many people with eating disorders struggle to cover these costs Anorexia is a very serious disorder and many people die from it every year – it has the highest mortality rate of all the mental illnesses. Sufferers of this disorder are all treated independently.

A physician will assess the persons family and medical health, their age and the extent of their symptoms. They will then come up with a nutritional meal plan, therapy sessions as well as moderate their excessive exercise. Patients will go for therapy to get to the bottom of their choices, behavior and underlying psychological problem. Often people with Anorexia also become depressed or anxious, in such cases the right medication will be prescribed. They will also be closely monitored to ensure healthy weight gain.

There are no specific foods that an Anorexic person should or should not eat. Although they should make sure that their diet is balanced and includes enough protein, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and lipids. They should ensure that they eat unrefined carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread, brown rice etc.
