Battle of Ypres took place during the First World War 1 in the year 1915 during the months of April and May in Belgium. There were many countries involved in this battle – France, Canada, England and Germany. This battle took place when the Germans did a surprise attack on the two divisions of France along the combined front row. Many machinery such as Gas masks, Chlorine gas, machine guns, airplanes and tanks were used and this battle is remembered as the very first battle fought using chlorine gas. This was the first successful use of chemicals weapons, three main chemicals were; Phosgene – a gas without any smell or color, Chlorine – a yellow colored heavy gas, Mustard gas – it is a toxic gas with a gross mustard smell. On the battle day, the Germans sprayed one hundred and sixty tons of chlorine gas in their defense, their troops carried almost 5,730 cylinder of the chlorine gas and each weighed 90 pounds and they were relying on wind in order to get the cylinders near the enemy line.
This battle politically helped Canada as they came one step closer to become its own nation after their contribution in the first poisonous attack in the history and many Canadians lost their lives. This second battle of Ypres demonstrated to be the very first horrible battle Canadian distribution had to fight and Canadians gained a lot of respect in France and Belgium. The Canadians fought till the night just to close their gap which was the first night Canadians launched a counterattack to bring the Germans out of the woods of Kitchener near St. Julien. After two days of battle the Germans attacked Canadian arm force with the chlorine gas but the Canadians held as a shield until the reinforcement arrived. Over six thousand Canadian men were killed. The Canadians won the High praise of courage after this battle.
Battle of the Somme took place during World War 1 in the year 1916 from July to November in the Somme River in France. This battle involved British, Canadians fought as part of it and French Empire against the Germans. This battle was considered one of the horrible battles of the War as almost 1,000,000 men were killed or wounded. This battle is also known for the first tank use in history, also the weapons like rifles, machine guns, heavy and light artillery. This battle happened because after their severe loses in the battle of Verdun against Germany, Germans have been pressuring the French empire, therefore the high command decided to attack the Germans from the north of Verdun, which will make Germans to move their men from the Verdun battlefield and France will be relieved. Canadians entered this war near the end of the summer, they were asked to capture the village in the Somme valley named Courcelette, and Canadians captured the village.
This battle was Politically Beneficial to Canada as they gained more reputation an astronomical fighting force and soldiers got recognized for their bravery and courage. This was one of the bloodiest battle fought by Canadians, they sent millions of troops to fight for the peace and land. Canada lost almost twenty four thousand troops in the battle. The Canadians also took the trenches and labeled them – one of the most known was the ‘Regina Trench’. The victory of the Courcelette battle was one of the greatest battles in the Canadian military history.
Battle of Vimy Ridge took place during World War 1 in the year 1917 during the month of April in Arras, Vimy Ridge. Canada, Britain and Germany were involved in the battle, Canada and Britain were against Germany to Capture Vimy Ridge where the troops of the British and Canada took the high amount of ground in opposition to German. Having more ground meant to have more space and more sight to attack the enemy. There was a Trench warfare, which was very dirty and most people would die after stepping on ‘The no man’s land’, which is an area between the opposite forces as they would get shot. General Arthur Currie, the first Canadian to be promoted to be a general and to lead the battle. Arthur made sure that all the preparations for the battle were completed, he also made underground light railway lines to move the artillery, the weapons such as; Ross Rifle, light machine guns, flamethrowers.
After all the harsh battles of World War 1, the battle of Vimy Ridge was the bloodiest battle of all time and also the most important for the Canadians. The weather conditions were very crucial, the weapons were violent. This was short but a very successful battle, where everyone proved that which team was worthy to receive money. This battle was politically beneficial to Canada because this was the first sign for Canada to become its very own nation because the commander in charge, General Arthur Currie planned a very successful diplomatic attack against Germany, he made sure that all of the soldiers were ready for the battle and all the artillery was in the place. In this battle three thousand five hundred and ninety eight Canadians died and seven thousand and four were wounded. Eleven thousand two hundred and eighty five Canadians died without any grave in France. Over sixty thousand Canadians were involved in the Great War, the Canadians also went through six thousand accidents. The victory of this battle, Canada was embraced by enthusiasm; this battle became a symbol for the nationalism of Canada. Pm Borden stepped out Britain and asked Canada to be its own nation.
