The Scientific Method is a method that can be used to show to test different things and produce results that a person may not have ever expected. In this paper will discuss the Scientific Method and how its approach has made the world of medicine such a unique and very interesting thing today. With all the things a doctor has access to in order to heal patients is unbelievable to a person who has not used the scientific method. I will explain how Stem Cells can help heal a person with spinal cord injury.

The scientific method is a systematic way of studying a problem. A lot of people use the scientific method and may not know it. The scientific method is categorized in parts such as identifying a problem, formulating a hypothesis, experimenting, analyzing data and the conclusion. STEM CELLSMy friend Bob was riding a motorcycle down highway 95 on a rainy afternoon. The road was slippery and he slide in to the guardrail upon hitting breaks and suffered a spinal cord injury. The medical team has decided that he is a good candidate for a clinical trial using stem cell therapy. Bob was very confused on his options and if he should go through with having surgery to repair his spinal cord injury. I decided to explain my knowledge of stem cells to Bob.
Stem cells are great cells to use because they recreate themselves and produce multiple mature cell types. Stem cells develop into a lot of different cell types in the body during early life growth. In human beings, organisms from the time of implantation in the uterus until the end of the second month of gestation form. Immature stem cells refer to a much more restricted period, resulting from the isolation of cells from the blastocyst, which forms 5 days after reproduction. “Stem cells are important for living organisms for a lot of reasons.
In the embryo the inner cells give rise to the entire body of the organism including all the many cell types and organs like the heart, lungs, sperm, eggs and skin tissue. ” In adult tissue, such as bone marrow, muscle, and brain, adult stem cells generate replacements for cells that are lost through normal wear and tear, injury or disease. (Medical News Today, 2016) Stem cells eventually differentiate partly because a particular gene is turned on or off. The spinal cord is the delicate tissue encased and protected by the hard vertebrae of the spinal column. The brain and spinal cord form the body’s central nervous system. Adult stems cells are used to treat spinal cord injury with the patient’s own bone marrow and human umbilical cord tissue. There has been growing body evidence showing that umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells are more robust then mesenchymal stem cells from other sources.
“The embryonic stem cells have an advantage of pluripotent and disadvantage of ethical concerns biomanufacturing issues. The Neuronal progenitors is multipotent and has a disadvantage of ethical concerns, biomanufacturing issues. The adult central system cells is multipotent and has a disadvantage of limited differentiation potential, biomanufacturing issues, and require surgical harvest. The adult mesenchymal stem cell is multipotent, autologous easily obtained and no ethical concerns but has limited differentiation potential and biomanufacturing issues. ” (Donnelly, Eleamor M. , 2012)
Stems cells can be used to treat spinal cord injury by mesenchymal stem cells(MSC), most commonly harvested from bone marrow which can prevent activation of inflammatory responses that lead to cell death. MSCs are injected in a number of different ways in these trials including directly into the spinal cord or the lesion itself or just in the skin. I hope that my friend has gain enough knowledge through my research to make a decision on whether to get treated by stem cell treatment but if not, I hope that through their own research they can come to a decision.
