Cannabis is the most used illegal drug in Britain, although the numbers of people using it are falling either due to deaths. Using it has also been linked, in some people, to serious, long-term mental health problems. Cannabis is naturally made from the cannabis plant. Cannabis appears many forms such as hash, grass/weed, skunk, and there’s even cannabis oil.
The main active chemical which is in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the ingredient in cannabis that can make you feel very chilled out, happy and relaxed, which is one of the main reasons why people use or take cannabis. However, THC has a down side which is that it can also make you hallucinate, it alters your senses, meaning you might see, hear or feel different from normal people.
There are many myths about cannabis, for example: it’s safe because it’s natural even that using cannabis will completely ruin your life, can influence your health and your future. Also, that using cannabis can lead you into using other or more dangerous drugs such as cocaine etc. Cannabis can have some very real and harmful effects on your health, mind and body too. It is said to have long term problems. Cannabis effects how your brain works and how it functions. It can make you feel very anxious and] paranoid, it can make it difficult for you to concentrate or focus and learn, it makes your memory worse and makes you feel less motivated and less encouraged.
Cannabis also makes you feel very hungry which is known as getting the munchies. Some people have one or two drags on a joint and feel light-headed, faint and sick. This is sometimes called a ‘whitey’. Cannabis may cause anxiety, suspicion, paranoia and can even make you panic, which is part depression. Tobacco and cannabis share some of the same chemical ‘nasties’ and just like smoking tobacco, smoking cannabis has been linked to lung diseases like tuberculosis and lung cancer. Smoking cannabis can make asthma worse. When people mix cannabis with tobacco they’re risking things associated with smoking tobacco, which can lead to coughs and chest infections to cancer or heart disease, which is similar when smoking.
Cannabis influences fertility. It can reduce man’s sperm count and can vanquish ovulation in women. Especially when a woman is pregnant and smokes cannabis it’s most likely that their child will be born smaller than expected.
