Furry Felines and Domestic Dogs

As Oliver Gaspirtz once said, “Dogs will give you unconditional love until the day they die. Cats will make you pay for every mistake you’ve ever made since the day you were born.” Although cats and dogs are similar in the sense that they are four-legged, furry, loving, and somewhat domesticated, cats and dogs are very different. Cats, typically selfish, needy, and lazy, are fairly useless. Cats live to make themselves happy. Dogs, on the other hand, are energetic and playful, very loyal, and live to make their owner happy. These are just a few things that set dogs and cats apart.

When arriving home after a long day away, only one species will greet you at the door, as happy as can possibly be to see you. Dogs, always accepting of attention and praise, will show their satisfaction with a lick on one’s face, or by the smack of a wagging tail. Cats, the more selfish and demanding of the two species, live to please themselves. Typically, cats only allow their owner to pet them when it is convenient for them. If petting occurs at other times, cats will show how displeased they are by moving away or hissing. To get a dog’s attention, their name simply must be called and they’ll come running. To get a cat’s attention, their name must be called, the house must be searched, and treats must be offered. Dogs, a man’s best friend, are happiest when their owners are.

One of these two popular pets are very self-sufficient and can easily take care of itself. Meanwhile, the other relies solely on the support of its owner. Able to hunt for and live off of small game, cats have no reason to return home for food. Equipped with sharp claws and the ability to climb trees, cats can evade predators. Dogs, generally drawn to squirrels and birds, really have no wat of catching animals to feed themselves. Aside from a few playful bites, dogs can’t defend and protect themselves from danger. Staying clean is an important part of an animal’s life and health. Cats are able to like their paws and rub it on their body, a method of self-cleaning. Dogs rely on occasional baths from their owners to keep their fur clean and prevent it from matting. Dogs require more attention than cats do to survive and live a healthy life.

Of the two species listed above, one is very lazy, while the other is energetic and playful. Cats typically sleep anywhere from twelve to sixteen hours a day. During the few hours a day when cats are awake, they have very little energy. Wanting to be left alone most of the time, cats don’t really enjoy playing. Dogs, on the other hand, are always awake, alert, and attentive. Never turning down a walk or a trip to the dog park, dogs love being active. Visiting a pet store clearly shows the differences, offering about half as many cat toys compared to dog toys.

Although the differences between cats and dogs aren’t very distinguishable, they are there and they are important. Dogs crave human satisfaction, cats don’t care if their owner is pleased with them or not. Dogs are a man’s best friend, cats are sometimes an owners worst nightmare. At the end of the day, you still love both.
