Classification Of Aliens in Out of All Them Bright Stars Story

Categories: Alien

Society has been lead to believe that extra-terrestrial life comes from another planet that could be in the Milky Way galaxy or one that is located in the outer reaches of the cosmos. They are many clichés out there as to what an aliens truly looks like. They are hardly painted in a positive light and the notion that exists is that they look like distinctive creatures with large hands and a long forehead, a race that can be fully distinguished from humanity.

They are depicted as being more sophisticated and technologically superior to their human counterparts. There seems to be a consensus on UFO stereotypes and how the human race is inferior to this more superior race. In truth the characterization of “Alien” is a very broad term and “While the overwhelming majority of aliens hail from outer space, aliens may occasionally emerge from little-explored zones on our own planet, from Under the Sea or the rarefied layers of the upper atmosphere.

They may be found underground or in the hollow interior of our planet. Some aliens come from other Dimensions, while others have their origins in Parallel Worlds or Alternate Histories” (Encyclopedia). Their origins are irrelevant as anything can be characterized and rationalized as being an “Alien”. Metaphors such as “Alien” are used typically to show how the subject can be indifferent or more specifically considered the “Minority” in a society which they feel unwanted and secluded in which the majority is the social norm. Systematic structures that exist contribute to the labelling of individual or group as an “Alien”.

With that being said, to provide further analysis novelties such as “Out of All Them Bright Stars” and “Seed Stock” will be carefully looked at to substantiate these claims made.

In the story “Out of All Them Bright Stars” a fellow by the name John who is an alien arrives on Earth and decides to visit a diner located at a truck stop. The waitress Sally automatically refers to it as “One of Them” (Kress 581). She has labeled John as something different then what the norm is considered to be. He is instantly portrayed as the “Outsider” or “Minority” as she doesn’t characterize him as someone but as something. This is a clear example of a statement made to say as though we are superior and you’re an abomination. He then is confronted by awkward stares from the likes of Kathy who is the wife of the Owner Charlie and an old couple that is also dining there. “She freezes and stares with one hand still holding the used filter up in the air like she’s never going to move again”( Kress 581). This to them is abnormal as they have never seen anything like this and there expressions are evident of that. This is how an immigrant that is from another country is treated as locals might see them as peculiar and unusual because of their appearance which is a justification as to why they are bullied and singled out. The novel “Seed Stock” has a similar theme as Kroudar who is a slave labourer is judged based on his complexion and how he looks. He is described to be “A short man, Kroudar gave the impression of heaviness, but under all his ship cloth motley he was as scrawny as any of the others, all bone and stringy muscle (Herbert 478).” This is one aspect that is used by imperialistic colonialists though out time to justify taking advantage of those who are considered primitive or alien to them. “Coloring and elaborating this view which perpetuates the attitude of racial, cultural, and technological superiority has been the most successful strategy of colonists throughout the world. Stream the thinking of the public to coincide with the manipulations of the rulers and anything is possible” (Monet and Wilson 3). These imperialistic ideologies are present in this story and are used to justify the actions of the rulers who take advantage of those who are considered indifferent. In essence Kroudar’s station as described as “low class” is partially due to his alien status. In a predominant society which is comprised of high class individuals as it mentions that most are “Scientists” they look down upon commoners such as Kroudar because to them he is inferior along with his Alien ways. This is the problem that exists within humanity as there lack of understanding for others demographics is there reason for alienating there fellow species and then using forced assimilation to try and make them the same as everyone else.

In “Out of all Them Bright Stars” Charlie gets upset because sally has decided to service John in which he shows his frustration by saying “You get him out. The government says I gotta serve spiks and niggers, but it don’t say I gotta serve him” which is as ignorant statement that reflects the system in power in which they are a product of (Kress 583). They have been raised with this superiority mechanism through imperialistic views and are lead to believe that those that are different even in the slightest way should be shunned. He refuses to acknowledge John as he “doesn’t even look at him” which is to say that have feels as though he is above him which comes from the false notions of superiority vs. inferiority (Kress 583).

Fear of someone who is classified as “Alien” can also be a factor as to why people resort to such hostile behaviours. As mentioned in “Out of all Them Bright Stars” the owner Charlie and his wife act in such uncivilized ways when they are confronted by john. There lack of understanding and fear dictates there behaviours towards him. Kathy mentions how “The Pentagon will hold them off, it doesn’t matter what weapons they got up there or how much they insist on seeing about our defenses” (Kress 584-585). This statement shows that there beyond diplomacy and that her fear and paranoia has caused her to become defensive as war has become her solution to this matter. Humanity wants to always be in control and when confronted by a force that is unknown to them they feel compelled to take action by trying to neutralize or supress the threat.

Overall, “Alien” is a classification that is directed towards those that are different and don’t fall under the majority. It is used as a justification to discriminate and impose ones rule on another due to a lack of understanding. That is the message that science fiction is preaching as it uses a metaphorical idea of aliens as an example to show the conflicts that society is presented with when one differs from another and the actions taken to demonstrate their dominance.
