Going into college is a pretty nerve-wracking experience, especially knowing that almost every aspect of your life will be changed socially, financially, physically and academically. Most high school students are taught that in college you’ll often be stressed, your eating habits might change and it will take every ounce of you to get high grades. College contrasts from high school in a great quantity. High school, unlike college will give you more opportunities to socialize, is more lenient and teaches material at a different level. College is a place where you find yourself surrounded with adults that want to achieve higher goals, want to further their education and become the next generation of professionals. People who go to college are the people who aren’t satisfied with being mediocre and feel like they could better themselves.

College is a whole other level of education in many aspects and can be tough for high school students because how extensively different it is. Academically, college has so many levels of education. High school has certain levels of how extensive the subject can be but college has levels from 100 – 300. Placement testing is used to determine where the student is at and is offered tutoring to place where they need or want to be. High school places you in classes that should be in, general subjects that should be put into practice. If you shine through your grades there’s the option to be placed in a more complex class but are limited to expanding your knowledge where your strengths are unlike college. College in math has from Basic Algebra to Abstract Algebra 1, Abstract Algebra 2 some of the most fervent classes. Beside from the fact that education is different, the structure of the college life is tremendously different from that of a high schoolers. In high school there are periods of when you have to get to your next class, have lunch and a certain time where you have to go to extracurricular activities.

Transitioning from High School to college is very eye opening. In High school you’re a minor, rely on your parents/or guardian for important documents to be signed, you could maybe rely on your parents/or guardian for transportation while in college, you are treated like an adult and expected to act like one. Time management is huge. If you don’t manage your time well, it could end up with late assignments resulting in F’s. Making your own schedule and making time for everything is very stressful for all students. Health wise, college without a doubt, will drain you. Generally, High school will not affect your health unlike college. As stated by Centers for disease control and prevention, some main points that affect a college student are social and sexual pressures, the urge to use available alcohol, drugs, and unhealthy foods. The challenge to get enough sleep is due to trying to balance classes, friends, homework, jobs, sports and leadership positions. College students tend to be anxious and overthink very simple things because of knowing the fact that you only have one try and if you fail there isn’t very much you can do. Some tips to help your health are to push yourself to exercise at least 2½ hours a week. In doing this you could lower your risks of getting chronic conditions, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and obesity. Eating fruits and vegetables is one of the best decisions you could make and will help you profusely. Eliminate fast food, chips, alcohol, drinks with high caffeine in them and try drinking tea to relax you. Eating healthily boosts your physical, social and mental wellness.

Nearly half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) diagnosed each year are among young people aged 15–24 years. Being sexually active in college is one of the biggest distractions that students have. Students are encouraged to go to their student health center and test. If you’re deciding to become sexually active, then you and your partner should test to make sure neither of you have STDs.

Sufficient sleep is huge. An adult should be getting 7-9 hours of sleep. Sleep helps repair your heart and blood vessels. Sleeps helps you feel refreshed and will help you concentrate more. On the authority of the National Blood and Lung institute, “sleep affects how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others.” Studies show that a good night’s sleep improves learning. Having an irregular sleep cycle and staying awake late at night may increase fatigue, stress and illness. College students’ social life can be existing or non-existent. High school students typically have their own group of friends based on compatibility.

There are many stereotypes of groups in HS such as: The intelligent ones, The fashionistas, The jocks etc. College as well has stereotypes of groups like the party animals, the creeps, the muscle heads, the sorority clones etc. Depending on the type of person, it can be easy or hard to have a social life in college. If you are more on the outgoing side, you could be a conversation starter and could have acquaintances or start friendships. Many friendships do not last long because of typical problems in High school. Lying, gossiping, love-relationships, manipulation etc. In college it’s pretty much the same. Many people choose not to make friendships because of these problems and it’s automatically assumed that everyone is fake or only cares about themselves. It’s hard to find people who will not just use you for their own benefit and want a actually friendship. For people who are antisocial or Asocial choose not to make friends they feel like they can only rely on themselves. These people feel it’s better to be a lone wolf and not get hurt or simply just don’t feel the need to interact with others. However you feel about the situation it’s important to socialize. Stated by Stevens Henager college, “Why do you need to have a social life? The answer is simple. Humans are social creatures. Being social makes us happy. We need to talk with, interact, and love other humans in order to feel fulfilled ourselves.” Being social will help you to feel happier, less alone and you could even get help from your new acquaintances and friends on assignments. Financially, money is the main reason why people don’t go to college. High school is free unless you’re going to a private school but even then a typical private school won’t cost as much as college. As reported by OSU, “seven out of ten college students feel stressed about their finances and nearly 60 percent said they worry about having enough money to pay for school, while half are concerned about paying their monthly expenses.”
