Equality means making sure that everyone has the same opportunities and rights regardless of their background, gender, lifestyle, or abilities. There are three main dimensions of equality today: economic, political, and social.

No one can say for certainty when the battle for equality started. All around the world, people have been fighting in different ways to achieve equal rights as others. The civil rights movement is one of the fiercest fights for equality. It took place during the 1950s and the 1960s for black Americans to gain equal rights as white Americans.

People have been discriminated for many years because of their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and more. Over the years, we’ve heard and witnessed many protests from people who aren’t treated as equal to others, including women fighting for their rights, people of colour fighting against segregation and apartheid, people from the LGBT+ community fighting against social discrimination, etc.

Countries today have various legislations that protect people against discrimination based on marriage and civil partnership, disabilities, gender reassignment, sex, religion or belief, race, maternity, sexual orientation, etc. Even so, we are far from living in a world where everyone is equal. Not all legislations protect people and give them the same rights. Many countries still prevent gay people from getting married, women from getting an abortion, wives from making decisions in their homes, etc. Even so, we’ve come a long way and achieved a lot so far.
