Five Agents Of Socialization: Family, Peers, School, Work, & Media

The five agents of socialization that everyone has experienced which is family, peers, school, work, and media

Family is the very first agent of socialization that everyone faces when born, because mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings, and other family members. Because each family member teaches the child of what he/she needs to know in life, and they show how the child to show clothes, computers, books, manners, to relate to other people, and how the world works around them. All these things that the family members teaches the child at a early age, the child will carry that knowledge onto the next generation to keep the tradition going.

Families are important especially in the beginning of a child’s life because they teach the child values, image, and basic manners.

Second is peer groups begins at a early age as well in a child’s life since they would actually meet other kids there age and share similar interest. This also teaches children of taking turns, learning different rules of the game, and other basic games.

When the children grow into teenagers they are still learning the different rules, lessons, among other things. Having a peer group is very important to kids because it helps them develop a new identity that is separate from family members, and for them to start gaining independence. It also helps that the kids will make opportunities to hang out with peer groups and be in different activities than what they would usually do with families.

Peer groups helps the child learn how to deal with problems that can happen, have friendly or serious competition, and to understand other people’s emotion.

Third is school where most children spend most of their time in to learn how behave around people, having discipline, and how to work with other people. Children in the United States mostly spend around 7-8 hours a day in school for 180 days, and going to school for 12 years. School helps kids by having them work together in projects, asking questions, having a schedule, and reading. School have been teaching the importance of having discipline, following orders, working with people, and to be comfortable following rules.

Fourth is work where most adults would begin to spend most of their time once they have finished school, and to take on a new responsibility. From a young age people are taught how to behave around strangers, to work together for projects, to get use to working long hours, among other things. Back in the past, people only worked one job their whole life until it was time to retire, but in today’s age many people work at multiple jobs or getting different types of jobs. Work teaches people how to be responsible for which ever job, and to be organized for any kind of job.

Finally is mass media which has the biggest influence that many people spend their times either listening on the radio, watching tv, or even reading the newspaper and internet. Media carries such an influence in society, because it is everywhere these days in the radio, in tv, newspaper, and your phone. Mass media is the one that has the most influence of gender roles because children watches tv at a young age like cartoons, anime, movies, and reality shows which influences them. It teaches kids how girls and boys should act, what to like/ not to like, how they should talk, and how they should dress in order to fit in.
