Every individual possesses a unique and differently shaped personality that allows us to differentiate from others, and the Myers Briggs Personality Inventory is a questionnaire that illustrates a framework of the preferences we choose in life.

Based on Carl Jung, it assesses how individuals prefer to get rejuvenated (through extraverted or introverted activities), to perceive and process information (throughout details or the overview), to make decisions and communicate (through attention to principles or to people needs), and to manage time and possibilities (by flowing with time or desiring closure). The MBTI diagnosis deduced me as an INFP, which consists of Introversion, Intuition, Feeling and Perceiving. These results, correspondingly, has various similarities in comparison to the Big Five Personality Test.

The Big Five is the most widely used and well-validated taxonomy of personality traits, using five dimensions to describe personality: Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness. From the results, I gathered that I have Openness to Experience and Agreeableness as my two dominant traits, followed by Extraversion, Neuroticism and the lowest degree of Conscientiousness. Openness to experience includes the tendency and ability to seek, detect, comprehend, and utilize patterns of abstract and sensory information. High openness is also associated with an interest in art and fantasy.

High openness to experience is reflected in curiosity and novelty-seeking; low levels are evident in preferences for adhering to convention and established patterns. While Agreeableness reflects one’s interpersonal orientation towards others, including sympathy, courteousness, interpersonal flexibility, kindness, trust and forgiveness. Conscientiousness, on the other hand, can be described as the tendency to follow the rules, be industrious and dutiful, and resist immediate gratification in the interest of long-term goals. Indeed, from a cybernetic perspective, conscientiousness is primarily about protecting long-term goals from short-term temptations.

Based on the MBTI, Introverts are usually re-energized and rejuvenated by our inner world of ideas and reflections more than by the outer world of people and activities, while an Extrovert is someone who shows gregariousness, is energized through others and dealing with the outside world and may be impatient with extensive and slow tasks. Whilst most of my extrovert friends gain energy from being around people, it is, in fact, tiring to me. Introversion for me is shown as I gain my energy through being alone, to mentally recover after a long day of social interactions, reflecting on ideas or experiences. While also prioritizing reading, writing, and watching as part of my daily routine. An example of this is shown when it’s time for exams, studying around other people makes me feel interrupted and I prefer to be alone to gain my fullest capacity of concentration. As an introvert, I have the tendency to think before I speak, which is important in industries where to think before you speak are integral, while also having the ability to think about things through different angles, being thoughtful and well-rounded in that perspective. However, I tend to avoid social interactions when I am mentally drained, desiring to work alone rather than working together with my colleagues. This, in fact, is a challenge that I have yet to overcome in order to always be my most productive self in the workplace, starting by changing my mindset of being capable to get things done and engaging with others regardless my current mental state.

Although I need to recharge by having some time alone, most of the time my extrovert side can be more dominant. Being surrounded by people keeps me uplifted and energized, making myself to be an outgoing person when meeting new people and working in teams. This is an advantage as I could easily socialize and communicate with others in a workplace environment, contributing effectively to the given projects, which correlates with the result I received from BFI. In cybernetic terms, Openness is associated with exploration and curiosity. Having that said, the need to explore new things usually correlates with Extroversion. Although I tend to be reserved on some occasions and having the need to be around familiar surroundings as a sign of Introversion, it is true on my hand as I prefer to seek new experiences and engage in self-examination rather than having the same routines repeatedly, justifying the Perceiving side on my MBTI results.

My attitude towards the external world falls more into the Perceiving category, I want things to be flexible and spontaneous. Open-mindedness is what I value most in my day-to-day life. Consequently, I like to postpone decisions to see the availability of other options. Doing things as I do it rather than forming a solid plan ahead of time, and mostly, doing things at the very last minute. This needs to be improved as in the workplace, things need to be done in order and in an organized way, in which I have a lack of capability to do those things. In addition, I need to learn to take a few moments before responding and committing quickly to a request from a colleague, making sure that my decision will be in the best interest for me and the company.

Conscientiousness is a spectrum of constructs that describe individual differences in the propensity to be self-controlled, responsible to others, hardworking, orderly, and rule-abiding.

Furthermore, having a low trait of Conscientiousness emphasized the Perceiving category even more, and it is accurate to me as I tend to dislike structures and schedules, possessing a bad habit of procrastinating, having a hard time completing specific tasks, while also being unorganized, which correlates with the Intuitive type.

This is known to be a disadvantage, as Conscientiousness plays a role in most of the major domains of life and positive aging. Conscientiousness predicts higher achievement in both high school and college independent of cognitive ability, with this in mind, while highly conscientious people are achievement-oriented, self-motivated and task-oriented. I have the tendency to be reckless, impulsive and out of control, and somehow I feel like I could be an unreliable partner in achievement settings and tend to break one’s promises, followed by the fact that I am motivated by my feeling.

I would often prefer to do other activities as opposed to doing my work and assignments. This has been a glaring problem in my productivity and is going to affect badly in the workplace. Therefore, a solution that I plan to enact is through creating a schedule with tasks that I would do on time. This would help me cut some of my work into more manageable pieces that I can get done more easily as opposed to completing large pieces of work at a time.

Being the Intuitive type, I prefer new ideas and options as opposed to predictable solutions, I favor innovation over practicality, and enjoy envisioning and theorizing more than implementing. Even if I have the ability to think outside the box, this, however, portrays me as a rather careless person as I tend to be inattentive to details and precisions, jumping from ideas to conclusions easily when inspired, and basically leaves things out in leaps of logic. However, I tend to see the bigger picture of a situation and have a habit of perceiving the underlying meaning in what people say or do. From this I realize the reason why I am unable to stay consistent with my daily journal, leaving most pages empty. Correspondingly, I get frustrated with having to follow a specific timetable and the same routines every day. In the workplace, as per Lisa Obre-Austin, this could be improved by paying more attention and fully comprehending the fine details on my part of the team project while also piecing together how all the parts serve the big picture.

In continuation, Agreeableness is associated with cooperation and relating positively to others. Provided that, I tend to be more social, always willing to help and have the aim to please others around me. While also, this is shown as during the time of conflicts, I tend to be in the middle of being the so-called the “mediator” of the friend group, making sure that there are no confrontations happening, which emphasizes my INFP personality type even more.

I tend to feel empathetic and have high concern for others, relating to the Feeling category in MBTI, having the tendency to always have an optimistic view of others, and having a great deal of interest in people. In decision making, feelers focus more on values and people than on the task itself. Establishing and maintaining harmony with the people involved is my priority, making sure that I know their points-of-view and knowing that the decision is the best for them. I have the tendency to care about how others feel, and feeling like I am obligated to make them feel better.

This, however, might not always be an advantage as emotion tends to be the driver of my decisions, I could decide not to go to work because I don’t like the environment, or being indecisive and having impractical results in decision making as I care too much about what others feel. Such implications mean I lack direction and may not meet deadlines in my career as tasks won’t be completed on time. This should be overcome as I need to realize that making everyone happy isn’t always possible. As Obre-Austin says, I need to work on how to make hard decisions, even if it may displease some people, while still balancing the need for harmony and inclusion with the need for fairness and logical decision-making.

Emotional Intelligence is “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action”. The result gives me a total score of 98, which is considered to have a good platform of emotional intelligence from which to develop leadership capabilities, having social skills and empathy as the highest points, continued with self-awareness, managing emotions and having the least ability to motivate oneself. Which all correlates with the results I received from other diagnoses.

If a worker has high emotional intelligence, he or she is more likely to be able to express his or her emotions in a healthy way, and understand the emotions of those he or she works with, thus enhancing work relationships and performance. This is an advantageous skill to have in the workplace as it means having the ability to emphasize, be resilient in the face of difficulty, and able to manage one’s impulses and stress. Which results in the ability to move forward constructively with the interests of the larger group at heart, granted the fact that I score quite low in Neuroticism, which is a “defensive response” to threat. High scores on Neuroticism are associated with anxiety, depressive affect, and emotional instability. This shows that I tend to be more emotionally stable and less reactive to stress. I most often appear as calm, and less likely to be tense or rattled.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a relatively new area of behavioral analysis as experts now agree that those who are most successful in business possess a high degree of this intelligence.

A study investigates that there is a significant and repellant connection between emotional intelligence and introverted employees, on the other hand, constructive and straight correlation between extroverted employees and emotional intelligence.

The test showed me a diagnosis of being Amiable, with a higher amount of responsiveness (emoting behaviors) in comparison to assertiveness (asking behaviors). Amiables are supportive, respectful, pliable, serious, picky, exacting, and critical. It is stated that amiable people make decisions slowly, requiring an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Which is true on my end, correlating my Feeling dimension on the MBTI, I tend to be compassionate, believing that a decision that makes everyone happier is just as valid as a decision that gets the job done fastest. Having the tendency to ask more questions of others rather than telling others what to do; amiables also tend to focus more on the people involved rather than on the task. Moreover, they are usually described as supportive, cooperative, diplomatic, patient and loyal. For this reason, I need to learn to compromise less and stick up for my position, regardless if there is a strong opposition in the workplace.

In conclusion, these diagnoses have provided me with knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses that I have yet to strengthen and overcome in order to maintain effective communication and relationships, both in my personal life and in the workplace. Therefore, enhancing the way I approach different people in different situations, and hence helping me to extend my personal skills and capabilities.
