The purpose of the interview is to gather ‘first-hand’ information about labor market changes and trends. The information from the interview will be integrated and synthesized with other information from the research in Part 1 and Part 2.Name: James Keller Flight instructor at Moorabbin Flight Services James is flight instructor at Moorabbin Flight services. MFS was established in 1993 providing flight training and charter operations for the past 25 years. Its primary operation is pilot training from a basic aeronautical level right through to Air Transport Pilot License. As an instructor at MFS some of his duties include teaching theory at ground school, briefing lessons prior to executing the flight, monitoring how well a student performs the exercise in the air and debriefing each unit once a student has completed that lesson. Through his experience being a pilot and flight instructor in the industry is an exciting time because of the number of opportunities pilots have upon graduating. When asked about the global pilot shortage, he confirmed that a number of pilots will be needed in the future to meet the demand and will result in an increase in revenue for local business in Moorabbin. Furthermore, we talked about the quality of training provided by flight schools and why several airlines decide to develop flight training programs in Australia. China Eastern is prime example of this and is currently training their cadets out of Victoria and Tamworth. He said Australia is widely recognized for high quality training compared to other countries and due to the restrictions of airspace, poor weather and high terrain are some of points which lead to choosing Australia for training.

James also talked about certain traits that make a good instructor and how rewarding it can be for instance sending a student on his first solo flight with very little to no experience. In addition he emphasized how important it is to show respect and enthusiasm, but it is important to know a student may come into lesson feeling low or lose motivation throughout their training. It is important to show care about your students’ dream of flying and know different training techniques based on their needs.
