Gun control is a term referring to legal measures that aim to restrict or prevent firearm possession and use. Throughout history, the term has been referring to use and possession of other arms, but it’s mostly limited to firearms today.
Firearms are regulated in a straightforward manner in most developed countries. In the USA, the issue is still controversial. Gun possession is protected by the Constitution. The Second Amendment guarantees the right for keeping and bearing arms. Changing the regulations regarding gun control requires changes in the Constitution, which is a very complicated thing to do. USA is the country with the highest incidence of homicide by firearm in the developed world.
The debate is ongoing. President Biden is pushing measures towards stronger regulations that would keep guns out of dangerous hands by requiring background checks for all sales.
A study from 2017 showed that intimate partner homicide rates were lowered when laws banned gun possession for people who were under restraining orders for intimate partner violence. Another study from 2016 showed that stricter laws reduce the rates of suicide.
