Introduction

Lack of sleep affects your work ethic in school. Most people don’t realize now that without the proper rest your brain can’t function to its maximum point and your body responds in the same way. Unfortunately the issue of sleep deprived students is too often overlooked and must be addressed more often. Students have trouble regulating their sleep time enduring their performance in school. Some may have after school program or may just typically with social media that they are not keeping track of how much time they have left for rest. After getting less than 5 hours of sleep students won’t enough energy to get them through the day.

How do expect to focus in school with no sleep in your system.Teens have a hard time regulating their sleep time which leaves bad outcomes on their education. Not only their academic conduct that is being harmed but also the stress levels, health, and concentration of students. “The majority indicated that not getting enough sleep had the following effects on them: being more tired during the day (93.7%), having difficulty paying attention (83.6%), lower grades (60.8%), increase in stress (59.0%), and having difficulty getting along with others (57.7%). Some students reported engaging in harmful behaviors to help them sleep”. Joyce, A.; Dimitriou, D. Sadly the percentages are extremely high and are only going to increase from there. If no action is taken now then society children will grow up following the footsteps of their elders. This study is proof that lack of sleep does affect the academic outcomes of students tremendously. Lack of sleep has also been linked to obesity. With sleep deprivation, there is an increase in the hormone, ghrelin, which is associated with hunger for high calorie foods. There is a decrease in the hormone leptin which reduces appetite. This leads to weight gain in many people.

Literature Review

Studies show that a good night’s sleep improves learning. Whether you’re learning math, how to play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be creative. Sleep Deprivation roughly affects the way people complete task that involves thinking. Things like studying or memorizing might seem hard but it is because your too tired to think. Students in high school and college suffer from a lot of sleep debt, this makes it tough for them to apprehend anything during class sessions. It’s worse when a students start school as early as seven in the morning with less than 5 hours of sleep in them. Many researchers have come to the conclusion that great use of social media and gaming time might be the reason students aren’t getting enough sleep. Adolescents are mostly occupied with using their. Sleep is a vital part of your life and it can affect your whole health system. Your body needs a source of energy to function properly. Your mind is the leader of the body, almost like the mastermind so if it off then the whole body is off. If your whole body is off should you expect from your class performance. You can’t possibly achieve anything in class if your not energized enough to keep anything in. You need a thorough amount of sleep to survive through a day. Imagine being tired and trying to sit through a almost 2 hour class and comprehend what being discussed. As early that school start a good amount of sleep is needed to process things clearly and focus in school. Adults are probably the most stressful ones of them all so it would be a catastrophe if they didn’t get enough sleep their whole mood would change. On top of their job, kids possibly, keeping up with personal payments, and ect lack of sleep would just had more stress on them and they won’t be able to keep calm or stay awake. This may be found to be very dangerous because some jobs as an adult may require you to be a hundred percent focused for example Firefighters, Police officers, Bus drivers, and etc the list goes on and on.

technology devices rather then monitoring their schedule so that they get enough sleep for the next day. This is true for many students who get caught up with what’s going on in social media. This affects the amount of effort put into homework and studying which then affects the amount of time you sleep. You will have to take out more time from your sleep to complete your homework assignments that you were neglecting due to distractions by technologies. “Students allow their social digital world to impede and compete with their academic time and biological sleep cycle”. That technology affects the amount of sleep a students gets which leads to their lack of performance in school. The domino effect begins when a students is first released from school. It’s up to the student to regulate what little time they have left to complete any additional task so that they are able to get a full eight hours of sleep. Sleep affects more than you know. Without enough of it your education might be your downfall and you might find some of your body functions start to disable. “Not getting enough sleep can lead to impaired hand-eye coordination, reaction time, vision, awareness of surroundings, judgment, impulse control, and can cause brief mental lapses called micro-sleeps, which impede concentration and retention”. All these skills that are impaired as an effect of lack of sleep will make it harder for students to be productive during school or in life all together. The importance of getting the appropriate amount of sleep can not be stressed enough. Agreed on the fact that sleep deprivation teampers with the ability to memorize which is a extremely important part of education because you need to take hold of information learned in class. Statement by saying that sleep can be the cause of forgetting information especially when its been studied for multiple times. This may very well be true because sometimes when you study for something for a significant amount of time you still might end up forgetting that vital information when it’s time to use it. Also Abel, Magdalena; Bäuml, Karl-Heinz T. disagrees with Antony, James W.; Paller, Ken A. becuase their belife is that students are more likely to forget while being awake rather than forgetting info while asleep. But either way most teachers found that sleep is important when it comes to being efficient at finding solutions to problems.

According to this “A series of negative binomial regressions showed that youth who typically sleep seven or fewer hours per night reported significantly more property delinquency than youth who sleep the recommended 8-10 h. Further, youth who reported sleeping 5 or fewer hours per night reported significantly more violent delinquency than youth who reported sleeping the recommended number of hours per night” Carter, Briana; Chopak-Foss, Joanne; Punungwe, Fadzai B.This would make great difference to the generation coming up and and even benefit academic achievement in school. Clinkinbeard, Samantha S.; Simi, Pete; Evans, Mary K.; Anderson, Amy L. and Goodlin-Jones, Beth; Tang, Karen; Liu, Jingyi; Anders, Thomas F. both agree that sleep disruption can affect the demeanor of adolescents. It’s even bigger than just education.

Students behavior are equally disturbed by the lack of sleep as education. The will to learn will become vulnerable to crankiness and attitudes. If there is no spirit to learn then a student won’t learn anything at all. In order for someone to learn you have to put a little effort in without enough rest it’s harder for you to learn. “Sleep deprivation corresponded to lower final scores”. Coletta, Vincent; Wikholm, Colin; Pascoe, Daniel. This may very well be true because testing requires focus and precision. If your tired during test nine times out of ten you will find yourself dozing off and might miss something important. Your ability to make good decision and fully comprehend a question you must have an adequate amount of sleep. This will make a difference on students scores with enough sleep compared to not having enough sleep. So many different outlets make an affect on sleep but no one has taken the time to sufficiently go over them. Many students still gamble the amount of time they sleep unaware of the effects of it to their health, stress, education, personal, and even social life. Even upper education students still don’t get the attention needed about their sleep time. Only a short percentage of students actually decide to look into the amount of sleep they get and how to resolve it. “College student populations would benefit from health education programs that address the effects of sleep deprivation and offers tips on good sleep hygiene” Qin, Pei; Brown, Cary A. & Carter, Briana; Chopak-Foss, Joanne; Punungwe, Fadzai B. Not a lot of students are worrying about the importance of sleep and that’s because their not educated on it’s role in their life.People should be more aware of the consequences of losing sleep because it is a long term effect. However another view was made by social Wallace, Deshira D.; Boynton, Marcella H.; Lytle, Leslie A. disagree with Qin, Pei; Brown, Cary A. because he believes that the quality of sleep is more important than the abundance of sleep. However the results of not having enough sleep is worse than not having the best of it. At Least your mind had the time to give itself rest so that it may function properly. It is easier to fix how you sleep but it is not it easy to make up time that has been lost. Joyce, A.; Dimitriou D. agrees with Ratcliff, Roger; Van Dongen, Hans P. A. when he says “sleep problems would be associated with lower cognitive and behavioural functioning”. This has been found to be true with multiple studies done by many other researchers in their articles. As sleep deprivation affects the reaction and also affects certain parts of your brain function this will leave a bad outcome for cognitive performances. “Adolescents commonly reported difficulty initiating sleep, unrefreshing sleep”.Short, Michelle A.; Gradisar, Michael; Lack, Leon C.; Wright, Helen R.; Dohnt, Hayley. This is commonly caused by a disruption in your sleep schedule. If you continue to go to sleep later than 1 in the morning and still have to wake up in the morning around 6 that is disruption to your sleep schedule because now your body is getting used to having less that 5 hours of sleep. For most adolescents, nine hours of sleep is vital Unfortunately, very few are actually managing that.

In fact, surveys show that less than 9 percent of teens get enough sleep. And the amount of rest they get decreases as they progress through high school. In fact, Cornell University psychologist James B. Maas, PhD, a leading sleep expert, goes so far as to call American teenagers ‘walking zombies’ because they live on so little sleep. So when you finally decide to sleep early than usual it will be hard because your body is not used it. An array of factors, including technology use, caffeine intake, heavy homework loads, extracurricular activities and schools with early start times. This does not mean it is not fixable although it will take consistency. “Poor-quality sleep associated with late-night texting or calling was linked to a decline in mental health, such as depressed moods and declines in self-esteem and coping ability”. Preety, R., Devi, R. Gayatri. Sleep deprivation is more than just feeling tired but it can have a long term effect on your health, For example your eye site might be affected because its not getting enough rest. Ranasinghe, Nirandhi,Gayathri, R., Priya, V. agrees with Preety, R., Devi, R. Gayatri. When they state sleep deprivation may impair academic performance, mood regulation, and total well-being.

Imagine as an adult your driving with people in the car and your really sleepy and barely keep your eyes open; You might find yourself in a car accident or worse. This goes to show you how important sleep is to your everyday life. Life without sleep is no life at all.

Method

“Mixed research method help “triangulate” our measurement strategy in effect, use different measures of the same concept to provide a more robust overall measure.” A mixed research method that includes qualitative which refers to the meanings, concepts definitions, characteristics, metaphors, symbols, and description of things and quantitative which the uses computational, statistical, and mathematical tools data or methods. “This will result in a comprehensive look at the research problem from many perspectives and will offer a more complete picture when analyzing results.”For this research study, I’ll be using a mixed research method. Using mixed method gives my research a bigger perspective of the study and helps cover all ground of the research. “important to add some elements of one approach to research using another approach”

Participants

A gather of twenty-one high school students and ten faculty members have participated in this research to come up with a very strong argument. All participants that engaged in the surveys were kept anonymous. All the participants in the inquiry were 14 or older. The survey was sent to Facebook groups through a link from the webpage where the survey was created.

Materials

For this research study I used my Macbook computer to type my paper and also to create my survey. I used Survey Monkey to put together my survey and used the link from the website to help send out through Facebook and emails. Facebook and Google Gmail was used to send out my survey to highschool students and faculty.

Procedures

The process of starting my research paper was quite long but I was able to find strong research question to go by. My initial question was whether or not Sleep Deprivation affect the academic improvement of students in urban schools. Nevertheless, I later wanted to reach a broader audience for my topic so I decided to add the perspective of faculty into my paper. Once my research question was complete I went on to start my first draft of my paper.
