We see haunted houses in movies and on tv all the time but what are they really like? Do they even exist? What are they like? Where are they at? There are many questions and mysteries about ghosts and haunted houses that are very intriguing. There are many famous haunted houses. One very famous house is Edgar Allen Poe’s house. Many people claim to have seem not only his ghost but also ghosts of his wife and other people that have lived there.
People have also reported hearing strange noises when no one was around, being tapped on the shoulder with no one there, and heard voices. During the 1940’s houses were built all around his house in the Poe Homes Neighborhood. A few residents say they are scared of his house and the local gangs don’t ouch the place. Also people say that now Poe’s ghost haunts the whole neighborhood! Some people claim that you can hear him running on the rooftops and one person even claims to have seen his ghost sitting at a desk writing.
Another famous haunted house is the White House! People that have stayed there have claimed to have seen Teddy Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and most commonly, Abraham Lincoln. The most famous story is that one night a woman was staying in the Lincoln bedroom and she heard a knock at her door. When she answered it she saw Abraham Lincoln Standing there. So why are some houses haunted? The reasons for this are varied. Some are complicated and unique to that spirit and others are simple to understand and relate to. Some spirits remain at or near the site of their death, especially if it was sudden and unexpected. They remain confused and don’t know or accept that they have died. These spirits remain in the area and try to make contact with anyone that passes by that is sensitive to spirits. This type of spirit can be found almost anywhere a death has occurred. Sometimes a spirit realizes that it is dead and that life continues beyond that. They do not go to the light for reasons such as the fear that their existence will end, fear of the unknown, fear of going to hell or being judged for past deeds. These spirits are bound here because of their own fears.
Other spirits stay behind to take care of unfinished business. It may be to make sure their finances and their loved ones are ok or to pass along one final message. Often these earthbound spirits do not remain here for long, once they can complete their goal, they normally pass over. If the deed that they are attempting to finish is complicated they will often contact the living to assist them. In many cases the living are unsure of what the spirit wants and it adds to the length of the time the spirit spends here. Almost anything that a spirit feels compelled to do before it goes to the light can make it remain here until it feels comfortable with how they have left things. Guilt can also be a reason for a spirit being stuck here. They may feel like they have left the family or loved ones too soon and uncared for. This is also the main reason why suicide victims and other spirits whose death was caused by their actions (alcoholics, drug overdose, etc) remain behind. They feel guilty over taking their life or contributing to their death.
The living can also hold a spirit here. By not letting go of them, they can be bound here by our love and unable or unwilling to go on until the living can come to terms with the loss. This happens when people go beyond the normal grieving process and become obsessed with the deceased person. They feel that they left things unsaid, undone, etc. and they feel guilt over it. This keeps the spirit from going over many times simply because it does not want us to feel this way or be that upset. There are many haunted houses all over the world. This includes all fifty states in the US. Also most countries if not all of them have haunted places of some kind. Very many sailing vessels also are reported to be haunted. A lot of people want to know if their house is haunted. People may hear noises or see thing and want to know if it means that hey have a ghost.
Unfortunately its still hard to tell. Can the events be explained naturally? You may have to call out an electrician to see if your flickering lights are just shorted wires or really something else. Maybe your HVAC service tech can find the true source of that cold spot you feel. You have to rule out all natural explanations before you can turn your attention to the supernatural. Other symptoms like noises, objects moving and other events can be traced to natural explanations so do a little research before you get concerned about a spirit. There once was a case in which a woman smelled roses at certain times and she associated the smell with her deceased mother. She swore it was her mother returning to visit her. Upon visiting her home, the investigator found the neighbors did floral arrangements out of their home. The houses were very close together and the scent was traveling between the two homes. The woman also made the connection that the “visits” only occurred in warmer months when the windows were open.
If nothing can be explained logically then you might have a ghost in your house. You could call up a ghost expert and he could take readings of the house and tell you if you have any paranormal activity or you could even call a psychic. Lets say you have a ghost and you don’t want it. Then what do you do? Well, there’s many things. First you could just flat out tell the ghost to leave the house. This usually works but not always. Also if you called the ghost back to your house it could be dangerous. If the ghost returned then it could bring other ghosts or even demons with it. Another thing you could do is get your house exorcised or blessed. That could drive any unwanted spirits away.
So now what do you believe? Maybe you live in a haunted house and didn’t even know it. If you do remember that ghosts usually won’t hurt you and sometimes can be your friend so don’t panic. Also remember that sleeping with the light on won’t help! Sweet dreams!
