Nando’s is more than their flame-grilled chicken, it was founded in 1987 in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville; by Portuguese audio engineer Fernando Duarte when he took his entrepreneur friend Robert Brozin to a Portuguese takeaway called Chickenland for a meal. After trying the chicken, cooked in peri peri, a portuguese chilli sauce, they bought the restaurant for about R 80,000.
They renamed the restaurant Nando's after Fernando's son. After two years, the restaurant had four outlets: three in Johannesburg and one in Portugal.KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, an entrepreneur who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, during the great depression. Sanders identified the potential of restaurant franchising, and the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" franchise opened in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1952. KFC popularized chicken in the fast-food industry, diversifying the market by challenging the established dominance of the hamburger. Branding himself "Colonel Sanders", the founder became a prominent figure of American cultural history, and his image remains widely used in KFC advertising.

What is social responsibility? Social responsibility is the ongoing commitment by businesses to behave in an ethical manner by contributing to the economic and social development of employees and the community at large.In 2008, after a 2am in the morning ‘vision’ about Nandos, Lauren Gillis (founder) took the idea of designing a bracelet for Nandos’ 21st birthday to feed 21 orphaned children to Robbie Brozin, he being the innovator he is, said great idea, and immediately placed an order for 6000 bracelets. It was one of Laurens most invigorating, exciting , scary yet liberating moments. Relate at that stage was Laurens’ house, a garage downstairs and her domestic worker Nellie. What Relate became in delivering that first order to Nando’s was a miracle and how the real South Africa should work. They turned the order around, were an instrumental part of Nando’s celebrations in delivering a handmade bracelets to all staff, the proceeds from the sale of these bracelets went to feeding 21 orphaned and children in Nando’s name. Still proudly display the original photo taken of the 21 Nandocas.

Close to 250 people from all walks of life joined Nando’s and Diabetes Association of Botswana (DAB) in a sponsored walk to increase diabetes awareness efforts across the country. The 5km sponsored walk dubbed “Nando’s Walk for Diabetes” started at the Blue Tree to Curves Gym at Middlestar and then back along the same route ended with a breakfasts for participants. All proceeds from the walk go towards the Diabetes Association of Botswana, which provides diabetes education, support in Botswana.
Ms Ncube further said Nandos would also support Diabetes Association of Botswana by sponsoring this year’s commemoration of World Diabetes Day in Ramotswa on November 11.Other activities organised by Nandos included annual youth camp and Christmas parties for children living with diabetes.In order to reach as many Batswana as possible, diabetes association conducted free diabetes tests to check for potential diabetic patients.She encouraged residents of Ramotswa to come up in large numbers and test for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure.
