Technology can be a catalyst for students to cheat. A study with 23,000 students done by Josephson Institute of Ethics showed that fifty-one percent had cheated in school. Of that fifty-one percent thirty-five percent had cheated with a cellphone. These students believed it was not cheating to look up the answer on their phones (Lynch “The Dark Side of Educational Technology”). Something on distraction. Something about focus. What is excessive technology? Internet Addiction (IA) is defined generally as one not capable of being in charge of his or her internet usage. This could be portrayed in various ways such as with phones or video gaming. IA is an impulsive control disorder. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMV), where all the clinical disorders are written, does not have internet addiction. However, Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), which is somewhat related, is in the DSMV. It is debatable whether or not Internet Addiction should be diagnosed. Research shows that IA is a real addiction, with withdrawal symptoms such as, irritability, sadness, and anxiety (Nie et al. 28). A typical person spends 15,000 hours behind the TV when they reach twelfth grade, compared to only 11,000 hours spent in school. The TV is on for seven hours in the average home. Children under two are not advised to have any screen time according to The American Academy of Pediatrics, since it is vital for their growing brain (Costa 55). Video games uses a part of the brain called the basal ganglia, which releases dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical in brain cells, one of its functions, determines if we are addicted to drugs such as cocaine. Dopamine being let out from video games causes a lack of the chemical for other vital functions, such as homework. Although the drug is different than video games, the brain cannot distinguish them (costa 55; Brookshire “Explainer: What Is Dopamine?”).

Research by Rubinstein et al. showed that it is quicker to do one job at a time than multi-taskinga, because time is wasted switching between tasks. Multi-tasking is an issue, when one does more than one task at a time; he or she may take longer doing the additional jobs especially if they have to make choices for the jobs. There is a solution to be able to multi-task better by changing the type of knowledge used. However, researchers argue its practicality and that resolution only works in rare situations. Some jobs are easier for multi-tasking than other jobs. For example, if one does two closely related jobs at a time, it is more difficult to preform it, than doing two different jobs, such as two verbal jobs versus a verbal and motor job. When people use technology there are two different ways that they multi-task. “Divided attention” is one way, it is similar to the dual-task above, it is when a person is doing at least two things at once. The other way of multi-tasking on technology is “rapid switching between tasks” it is when one is focused on one thing at a time, but quickly changing the stimulus back and forth. Divided Attention is slow, because the person is not getting the complete information, and when one is rapidly switching between tasks he or she can miss information while using the other task (Wood et al. 366).

Topic sentence about focus. ADD. Socially. Another point. Recently there was a focus on studying Internet Addiction and Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADD). IA is directly connected to signs of ADD, such as lack of attention and impulsive behavior. This could be because their brain functions differently than normal connected to them having weak boundaries and not being shy (Nie et al. 29). According to The University of Washington’s Department of Pediatrics, a seven-year-old child may have ADD because he or she watched TV when he or she was three years old (Costa 55).

Topic sentence about memory. What is memory. How long do they retain it for? Another thing about memory. Internet Addiction negatively impacts working memory. Working Memory, a role of the prefrontal brain, permits upkeep of information, and is necessary to plan. It is vital for youths to reason, learn and understand language. Issues from IA are comparable to other behavioral and substance addictions, like pathological gambling and alcohol dependence (Nie et al. 29).

Conclusion: Too much technology can be problematic for youths, it is a disruption, prevents attention, and remembering things. One sentence about the three topics. Another sentence about them. A closing sentence. So what sentence. Even Bill Gates limits the amount of technology his children are allowed to use (Costa 55).
