Nowadays science is evolving at a really fast pace, in fact biotech startups talk of making death “optional”. Face- book is working on telepathic interfaces. Bionic limbs will soon outperform human limbs. With continuing advances in science and technology, people are beginning to realize that some of the basic parameters of the human condition might be changed in the future. One important way in which the human condition could be changed is through the enhancement of basic human capacities. Are ethical this enhancements?
These enhancements may include brain modifications to increase memory, alterations to bio- chemistry to increase resilience to the environment or the creation of new capacities. It may also include living for much longer or alterations to our appearance to make us more attractive or more aesthetically distinct. Humanity is entering a transhuman era, where biology is treated as something to be manipulated at will, depending on one’s lifestyle interests rather than health needs. How far society is prepared to accept these kinds of applications and what ethical issues they create?
Human enhancement has gained popularity between scientists, entrepreneurs and media, each of whom have debated the ethical and moral desirability of such circumstances. As example Dr. Enriquez said ”Half of life on earth is not a result of natural selection, we designed it that way it is not nature choosing”. So the legitimacy and desirability of such choices is crucial for the global economy, as the transformation of the humankind has critical implications on how society is organized.
Enhancement is contraposed to therapy. In general, therapy aims to fix something that has gone wrong, by curing specific diseases or injuries, while enhancement interventions aim to improve the state of an organism beyond its normal healthy state. Moreover, for those who are in favour of human enhancement states that this idea helps people who have some kid of disease have a better lifestyle and does not create a gap between healthy people. However, those who disagree with the idea states that we are playing god by enhancing ourselves more than what god gave us. Even so, human enhancement should be legalised for the sake of mankind to help those in need of enhancement to attain the life of a normal person, to equality and fairness among those and to prevent social disruption as well. The answer depends on who you ask. For instance Samantha Payne, co-founder and chief operating officer of Open Bionics, a Bristol-based robotics firm says that:” we decided to focus on tackling the social stigma around1disability.
We found the best way to do that was to harness the narrative of superheroes and to make the devices super-stylish and enviable. We wanted children to walk into school and show off their new bionic hand and make their friends envious”. So she refers to a bionic device as an ’cool’ gadget that people can wear in the street, almost like an accessory to wear it every day. Finally this it seems capricious to me, but I believe that is where the future is headed.
Now, the real danger comes from tinkering with the human mind. As Dr.Enriques said because in everyday life we make decision, this decision will change our future. I feel that transhumanism will eventually create people who no longer see themselves as entirely human, having merged themselves so completely with their technology. I hope that human enhancement will be about helping people to live a normal life or a better life especially the disabled or those who have lost their limbs and unable to work.
