In a world with so many serious issues, we sometimes forget the importance of taking good care of ourselves or maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Whilst it is vital to make an effort for your world community and its sustainability, including fighting malaria, the way forward starts with you; it is crucial to look after yourself and your health. Good physical health means good mental health, and by looking after them you are giving yourself a better opportunity to relax and enjoy this summer, hopefully giving you the chance to help others too!

The winter months are over, but that’s no excuse to stop paying attention to your health!

Here are Fight Malaria’s top tips on staying fit and healthy this summer.

Drink Water!

We’ve all heard it before, but this tip cannot be missed out; it is simply too essential. Our bodies run on water and the hot summer weather makes it all the more important to stay well hydrated. Drinking water is especially important when you enjoy some alcoholic beverages, be they Pimms, beer or just a glass of wine; Alcohol dehydrates you and affects your kidneys by inhibiting certain hormones. Don’t wait until you’re feeling thirsty to drink a glass of water! Thirst can be a sign that your body is already dehydrated. This will impact not only your health but also your mental health and energy levels. Not good for a summer break!

Get some sunshine!

Studies show that almost 50% of the Uk’s population could be Vitamin D deficient. This matters for several reasons; vitamin D has important roles in immunity, bone, muscle health, blood pressure and cognitive functions including memory. The best and easiest way, weather permitting, is to expose your skin to bare sunlight; not too hard after all! You don’t need to stay in the sunlight long enough to tan or burn; 10 minutes will do. AIm to do this 3 times a week and once you’re done, remember to apply your usual skin care products and sunscreen.

Stay Active!

With the sunny weather and gentle breeze, what better time than summer to start living an active lifestyle! No specific instructions on this one; just put some trainers on, go to the park and do some sort of activity! This doesn’t have to make you sweat, pant or excessively tire you; after all, the summer months are for fun, not pain! Here are some examples of how you could make easy moves to stay healthier, and hopefully have a bit of fun! Walk your dog every day down the park A family cycle ride or holiday Go to an active leisure centre, such as forest climbing or swimming

Try to eat healthily!

We all love a good BBQ in the summer months, but they aren’t always the healthiest meals. We don’t want you to stop doing them, but maybe think of healthy ingredients you could implement into your dishes. Maybe replace the fatty burgers with some fresh fish on the grill, or use seeded buns. It doesn’t need to be dramatic but it makes all the difference!

Think you’re healthy already? Then help other people live better lives by spreading awareness of malaria and important issues across the world. We need help in order to fight such complex, diverse issues the world faces. It’s time to take action, and this starts by raising awareness and preventing malaria as much as we can as individuals.
