Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, better known as XXXTentation by his stage name, was one of the most controversial rappers these last two years. Onfroy performed fast and slow in different genders, including hip-hop and R&B. The rapper rose to the most important lists of the hip-hop industry in its last year of life. Onfroy was in the eye of the hurricane with many scandals that affected his reputation that ended his life.
Around 2013 Onfroy at the age of 16 was charge of gun possession and spend almost a year in a juvenile detention. He met Stokeley Cleven Goulbourne while he was in custody and after they were both released, they collaborated together to make music. When Onfroy spent his time in the correction facility, he started to write his music and then uploaded his first song, ‘Vice City’ in SoundCloud platform. This was that spark of Onfrey’s musical career with great success. Many of his songs and first album entrances on the Billboard charts, gets a RIAA platinum certification, his 2nd album sold 131, 000 discs a week after been released and debuts at number 1 on the Billboard charts, and many more were on their way.
But not everything was picture-perfect for Onfrey. As a child Onfrey showed misbehavior and his mother couldn’t handle, she had drug addiction problems that resulted in kicking her own son out of her house. Onfrey lived with his aunt that encouraged him to take choir classes were he found out his talent but, his behavior did not change, he was spelled from middle school for punching a classmate. Then he later on moved with his grandma who made him feel like his mother and his mother more like a sister. According to Lily Fletcher author of XXXTentation: Slain rapper whose turbulent life informed his brutal but influential art, “By the time he was in high school, Onfroy had begun to commit other offences and had been charged with armed robbery, possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and possession of oxycodone.” Onfroy was also accused of felony charges of aggravated battery of a women, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness tampering. He was arrested and was giving months of prison then released with 6 years of probation.
On June 18, of this year, “Onfroy was gunned down in an apparent robbery in Deerfield Beach, about 43 miles north of Miami. He was leaving a motorcycle dealership in his BMW when he was approached by two masked, armed men, who reached inside his vehicle, removed a small bag, and shot him multiple times,” informed Fletcher. After one hour been rushed to the hospital Onfroy was pronounced death.
Onfroy wanted to make constructive changes in his life by donating money to domestic violence preventions programs and children charities; he also wanted to leave a positive message with his music. He made personal goals like finishing school and getting a GED but none of these goals will be completed. An Instagram post shared by Resurrection, “You are one of the most talented musicians I know.
