I always want to influence and lead others. I also like to take responsibility and to be in charge. I work in a non-unionized organization and there was a time the company management attempted to change the working days of our shift without the required 2 weeks notice stated in our employment letters. I was able to rally my other shift mates and was able to make our position know to the management. The management listen and cancel the planned shift change.

For any leader to earn the trust and confidence of his or her followers, such a leader must be honest. An honest leader will exercise no fear and will be bold to make tough decisions. During the face off with the management of the organization I work with, I was promised a better annual performance review which would have earned me a huge salary review provided that I persuade my shift mates to accept the proposal of the management. I refused this offer. Honesty and Integrity are values that I hold in high esteem. I say things as they are and I apologize when I am at fault.

I can see other people’s emotion and empathize with them in their period of need. There was this new co-worker in my shift. I noticed that he kept to himself for so long and this is quite unusual of him. I approached him to know what the problem is. He told me that his work partner is getting hard on him without considering the fact that he is new on the job and would need more time to adjust. I had a chat with both co-workers, and they then get along fine. I can say that I am emotionally intelligent. I do delegate’s duties and responsibilities. Doing this gives sense of responsibilities to other co-workers and help boost team moral. Based on my analysis, I believe that I am an effective leader based. I posses the following characteristics;

Situational, Transformational, and Servant Leadership

Situational Leadership

Situational leadership model is based on the assumption that for a leader to be effective, such leader must be versatile in two or more leadership styles. Leaders are expected to craft their leadership styles based on the task to be performed and the ability of the team members who are to execute the intended task.

Transformational Leadership

A Transformational leader is a leader who is able to create visions and also able to convince his followers to key into his vision. He makes his followers see the good in his vision. Based on the trust and loyalty the followers have for the leader, they are always ready to work harder for the vision of their leader to be accomplished.

Servant Leadership

Servant Leadership is a leadership style is which the leader focus more in serving his followers. He consider the well being and development of his followers to be more paramount. In return, the workers become more committed, engaged and performed better.

Of the above mentioned three approaches, I am of the opinion that Servant Leadership is more effective than others. I based my opinion on the fact that servant leaders consider the well being and development of their followers to be more important. Followers of such leaders are always well engaged. They see the vision and ideas of the leader as theirs and therefore, will go extra mile to make sure it succeed.

My personal experience is about the leadership style of my team leader at work. I would say he uses the Situational Leadership style. He craft his leadership styles based on the task to be performed and the ability of the team members who are to execute the intended task. His duties as a team leader includes assigning duties to a team of 25 team members daily. He has been able to identify the skills and competence of each of the 25 team members. He knows who to do what and with who. This has greatly improve the performance of the team. For the past 2 years that I have been working under my team leader, my team has always surpass targets and expectations.

Leader who has used power and influence in a harmful way. Name: Jim Jones. Motives for use of power;

  • Jim Jones was an infamous cult leader from the 50’s through the 70’s.
  • Jim Jones was selfish, impulsive and unrestrained, a clear description of personalized power.
  • Jim Jones proclaimed the mass suicide of over 900 people including children by means of drinking cyanide.

Leader who has used power and influence in a positive way. Name: Mother Teresa. Motives for use of power:

  • Mother Teresa used coalition to engage followers to aide in the objective of aiding the poor.
  • Mother Teresa was admired by many for her charitable work.
  • Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation which had over 4,500 nuns and was active in 133 countries in 2012. The congregation manages homes for people dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis.

Leadership Scenarios

Leadership Style: Telling.

Reason: The leader defines roles and tells people what, how when and where to do various tasks. Since the employee is excited to learn about her job, the leader only need to tell her how to perform the assigned tasks.

Leadership Style: Directive Leader

Reason: The staffs understand their roles and required level of performance. They are also competent in their jobs. What they will require now is a directive leader, who will give specific guidance on how to accomplish the task.

Leadership Style: Supportive Leader

Reason: The staff is creative, competent and uses good judgement in her daily work life. Now that she does not feel confident in her own ability to perform job tasks, a supportive leader will show concern for her needs. With a support from her leader, she will get her confidence back and will be able to work on the job tasks.

Leadership Style: Selling Style

Reason: Since the leader provides both directive and supportive behaviour, he would direct the about to retire employee to carry on his duties in a way that will positively influence the morale of all of the staffs.

Leadership Style: Delegating Style

Reason: Since the group interrelations are good, the people are competent, and motivation is high. The leader only need to provide little direction or support.

Personal Leadership/Management Profile

Based on my new found knowledge and insights of leadership and management, I would like to have a leadership / management profile with the following values.

Honesty and Integrity

As a leader among my co-workers, I have come to the realization that being honest is a vital value that retains followers loyalty and cooperation. A leader must be willing to sacrifice personal gains for the benefits of his followers. There has been an instance that I had to let my co-workers realize that some decisions of the management were to improve sales. The business was for profit making and not a staff welfare scheme and we must be ready to accept some of their demands. It was a hard truth and I just have to say it the way it is.

Confidence

To be an effective leader, you should be confident enough to ensure that other follow your commands. A leader must not be in doubt of his own ability. Once a leader becomes unsure about his own decisions and qualities, the followers becomes discouraged. And if this is persistent, they will surely push for a leadership change.

Delegation and Empowerment

A leader should handle key responsibilities while leaving the rest to his followers. By that, I mean empowering your followers and delegating tasks to them. I do delegates duties and responsibilities. Doing this gives sense of responsibilities to other co-workers and help boost team moral.

Empathy

Leaders should develop empathy with their followers. A leader must be able to see other peoples emotion and also empathize with them in their period of need. A leader must be able to understand the problems of their followers, feel their pain and provide needed support. Empathizing helps to build closer connection between leaders and their followers.

I would also incorporate the Trait Theories of Leadership into my practice. These traits are, Higher desire for achievement (Drive), Strong desire to influence and lead others (Desire to Lead), Showing high consistency between word and deed (Honesty and Integrity), Have an absence of self-doubt (Self-Confidence), Be intelligent enough to gather, synthesize, and interpret large amount of information, to create visions, solve problems and make correct decisions (Cognitive Intelligence), Be aware of my emotions and that of others (Emotional Intelligence), Have a high degree of knowledge about the company, Industry and Technical matters (Job-relevant knowledge), Be sociable, assertive and rarely silent (Extroversion). These new learning will help me to become a better Leader / Manager, because I am now able to manage power so as not to become dictatorial, develop trust among my followers, provide Ethical Leadership, provide virtual Leadership and an effective team leader.
