The article, titled Mixed Messages about teen sex, discusses the issues within different areas on teen pregnancy and sex. The issues are plagued with errors on how the topic is handled. Whether, democratic, republican, rich or poor the issues are there and handled in, most cases, drastically different ways. From complete abstinence and no other choice, to don’t have sex but use contraception; it never is a clear message. The article was based on social norms, secondary analysis and only sites a couple other articles for stating a specific point, there is no reference to a time period for the study. Possible solutions to these issues given by the article are mostly based on communication. It is important to keep an open dialog on the subject and not to shy away from it. Abstaining would be the best but if not, protection should be used, which should not be taboo to ask for. Currently the information is mixed without a common ground. Information needs to be focused and informative, leaving no room for interpretation.
The article looks to inform those that in a similar situation or curious about the topic, whether that be parents, educators, sociologist or teens themselves. It may not be from a popular magazine but would be well suited for the general public. The article was written well to be understood by a public audience as well as useful public sociological information. The research article, A Multilevel Examination of Peer Victimization and Bullying Preventions in Schools, examines the connections between the environment of schools and violence/victimization and why it happens. The authors use secondary analysis and case studies, targeting sociologists and educators. Utilizing basic sociology, they show how much bullying is an issue and help to figure out how it can be decreased or prevented entirely. Through setting of violence and bully prevention programs they propose to educate and help eliminate school violence.
When elimination is not possible, the idea is to offer peer support and other supporting options for those effected. While support groups may help, they may not always be available but when they are it may allow bullies and victims to release and realize their feelings in a productive nonharmful manner. In the end, we need more support for those effected and to help those that may turn to violence before they do. Most of the information from this article was based between 2005-2006, though the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) is conducted every 4years. The article was written by and for sociologists and educators but should be understood by the general populace.
