My Determination to Succeed and Steps I Take to Demonstrate It

In life, success is a process of elimination or choosing between the worthy and the worthless. Thus, unless we are inspired by the determination and a great purpose to make our life count, we may not make much of an impression about us. In life, difficulties can be overcome when we are determined therefore it is very important to be determined if we desire to be successful.

Several times, it has been necessary for me to have a strong will and determination. I grew up in a remote part of Nigeria where a teacher’s college diploma seemed to be the highest academic achievement around me. With determination and hard work, I was able to attend one of the best universities in Nigeria and after my first degree, I got a Scholarship from my local government to study in United Kingdom for my postgraduate degree studies.

Looking back through all these years, my success and achievements wouldn’t have been possible without some conscious efforts and distinct qualities which I vehemently demonstrated.

Setting Personal Goals

This has always been the first step I take in achieving a self-desired success. I write down my goals and paste it on my bedroom wall so I can see it every time. Setting goals gives me a clear sense of direction and helps me to focus on nothing else but my goals. Instead of letting others tell me what to do, it helps me to proactively take charge and think about what I want for myself. Setting goals gives me the vision to work toward and I ensure that I push myself to get the best results rather than waiting for things to happen. A major goal for me was to achieve at least a master’s degree in an engineering discipline.

Cutting Down the Noise

When I am determined to succeed, I usually narrow down my desires to a major goal to focus on. I try as much as possible to avoid shooting for hundreds of different things at the same time. This makes it easier to achieve my goals one after the other.

Targets and Deadlines Setting

It is part of human nature to procrastinate especially when we don’t feel the time is perfect to act. The strategy for me to avoid procrastination is to set reasonable targets and deadlines to achieve my goals. This connects me with my goals all the time and reminds me to redirect my focus when negative obstacles arise. Targets and deadlines motivate me to work harder than usual towards achieving my innermost desires. For example, one of my past targets and deadline was to achieve a master`s degree in Engineering with a distinction grade before clocking 30years of age. I am so glad I did.

Planning

I believe in making plans on how to achieve my goals, for example, I always make a study plan to ensure I cover all the curriculum required for my studies. I believe in the popular saying that “he who fails to plan, plans to fail”. I write down my plans and follow them consistently to avoid any distractions.

Hard Work and Total Commitment

I show absolute commitment to my plans combined with hard work. I dedicate time daily to work on my goals. This involves making research, long hours of personal studying and attending paid preparatory classes and training sessions. Commitment pushes me to stretch beyond my normal self to reach my desired new heights. When I am committed to achieving a goal, I find it easier to figure out how to achieve what I want. In other words, commitment enhances my resourceful abilities.
