From depression and eating disorders to aggressive behaviour and ADHD, I have encountered individuals that suffer in ways that one can only imagine. Seeing my own family and friends suffering from such mental health problems ignited a spark of curiosity and concern in me to identify what is causing these detrimental impacts on the lives of my family and thousands of others around the world. Experiencing these bouts with sufferers increased my sensitivity and open-mindedness towards the issue and has led to a genuine interest in the emotional wellbeing of others. I can relate to others in these situations and this will prove useful in my future career aspiration. Through studying A levels in Biology, Psychology and Sociology, I have adopted a scientific approach when understanding the various disciplines in psychology and have a familiarity with research methods, including data collection, analysis and evaluating theories or evidence, in addition to my knowledge of research ethics. Amongst this, my arithmetic skills have been sharpened. With this in mind, I believe taking a Psychology degree will allow me to acquire a deeper understanding of different perspectives and get an insight into problematic behaviors and also develop my knowledge further in other aspects of Psychology.

My personal experiences inspired me to pursue Psychology further, in addition to this, my absolute passion is to work with young people. Aside from the reassurance I received about having a good connection with children, I also ascertained many valuable and transferable skills during my time volunteering at a local primary school. For example, I developed patience when I had to work with children that were being difficult. When managing these situations, I realized I was becoming more able to be empathetic and build a strong rapport. I also learnt to work with people I don’t know and this refined my interactional skills and gave me a better understanding of cultural and religious diversity. I am a graduate of the NCS program during which I was faced with demanding situations where I had to lead my team to resolve problems and progress as a unit. Through my leadership role, I fostered a positive attitude, which helped me to liaise and network with others to ensure our project was fulfilling its original objective – helping improve the local community.
I am also a member of The Purple Hearts charity and a supporter of other charities such as McMillan and Race for Life for three consecutive years in addition to the support we have given to the local homeless shelter. This has sprouted a sense of service to the community and responsibility in me. Within this, I have transformed my organizational skills and now possess the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
As a prefect and a member of the school council, it is my responsibility to influence others. Therefore, I am required to be a clear and persuasive communicator and possess crucial analytical and effective decision-making skills to be able to ensure all students have the best environment to achieve educational success. Through this role, my natural assertiveness and ability to remain calm under pressure has proven useful. Aside from this, I have participated in both the Maths and Mad Science society through which I have demonstrated problem solving abilities and a healthy curiosity and research-minded approach to my learning. In my free time, I enjoy spending time on creative writing and have consequently enhanced my written skills. I also took part in a Martial Arts course where I learnt discipline and commitment. Further to this, as a former employee at many establishments, I have confirmed my ability to work well as part of a team and collaborate, but also to work independently, using my initiative.
I believe my passion and determination to do more than just listen – to really understand others, combined with my academic ability, will empower me to thrive in my studies and become more than just a student at your university.
