Our Generation And The Internet

Technology and the internet continue to change our lives drastically, to the point where many people cannot live without them. It seems like everywhere you go, young people are always on their smartphones, texting their friends, or casually scrolling their feed in social medias such as Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. The internet have mainly affected people between the ages of 15-25. Since young people have enough leisure, they take that opportunity to use the internet, and are constantly using their smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Young individuals have developed to have an addiction to technology and the internet because of how frequent they use it. In Lee Drutman’s book review of The Dumbest Generation by Mark Baurlein, he believes that young people are immensely affected by technology and the internet in a negative way. Our generation is being controlled by technology and the internet because of how young people are losing knowledge of important facts than they are gaining them, how these electronic advances are causing ignorance and apathy, and how young people are “speeding to stupidity”.

First and foremost, technology and the internet has affected young people that they are losing knowledge of important facts than they are gaining them. Young individuals are always on social media and come across celebrity news. With celebrity news, we know where these celebrities are doing, where they’re at, who they are currently in a relationship with, and more gossip about them. Now if you were to ask an adolescent, “Who are the nine justices on the Supreme Court? ”, it’s most likely they won’t know what you’re talking about. Why? Because they are too busy finding out things that aren’t important, such as celebrity news. In fact, Drutman’s book review, “Speeding to stupidity — or not”, he mentions “When Bauerlein tells an audience of college students, ‘You are six times more likely to know who the latest American Idol is than you are to know who the speaker of the U. S. House is,’ a voice in the crowd tells him: ‘American Idol’ IS more important’” as Mark Bauerlein says(qtd in Drutman(E4). This shows us that our generation is careless about what’s important, proving that young people are losing knowledge of important facts far more than they are gaining them.

Secondly, Drutman and Bauerlein see that these electronic advances are causing ignorance and apathy. A young individual spend most of their time on their smartphones, going on their social medias or surfing the web, ignoring what’s around them, which affects their social lives. Adolescents overuse technology and internet so much that eventually they stop doing other physical activities, resulting in them having a lack of interest in almost any activity. In addition, technology does impact our lives on how we communicate, because it changes the way we have face-to-face conversations by not being able to show true emotions and feelings while we speak. Lee Drutman mentions in his review, “The ceaseless pipeline of peer-to-peer activity is worrisome, he argues, not only because it crowds out more serious stuff but also because it strengthens what he calls ‘pull of immaturity’”as Mark Bauerlein says(qtd in Drutman(E4). This proves that our generation is decreasing with peer activity because young people are so addicted to their phones and preferring to use texting as a primary source of communication, and for this purpose, these electronic advances contribute to ignorance and apathy.

Finally, based on how the internet and technology has affect the lives of young people, it makes us question, are people “speeding to stupidity? ” The internet itself changed the way adolescents engage with information or news. Lately, there has been a lot of “fake news” on the internet, and on social media. Young people tend to rely on these sources for the latest news and have their own opinions about it, when in reality they don’t know the full or real story to it. Making them unsure of what information or news they should or should not believe. In an article called “Fake news on the left” by Ann Friedman, she mentions, “In December, a Pew study found that 23% of U. S. adults had shared a made-up news story, either knowingly or not”(Los Angeles Times). This proves that people tend to share their opinion on a specific topic, and younger people engage with information that others share, making them “speed to stupidity”.

In conclusion, technology and the internet continue to change our lives drastically because of how attached young people are to it, to the point where many people cannot live without them. Drutman and Baurlein believe that young people are immensely affected by technology and the internet in a negative way. Our generation is being controlled by technology and the internet because of how young people are losing knowledge of important facts than they are gaining them, how these electronic advances are causing ignorance and apathy which affect our social lives, and how they engage with fake news. Which leads us to ask ourselves, with technology and the internet being constantly on our minds, are people really “speeding to stupidity? ”
