Change is something that cannot be stopped nor prevented. Nothing is ever permanent in this world. Everything is constantly moving and progressing. We must strive to accept that this is the way the world advances. Zena Wynn once said, “Rehashing the past wouldn’t change anything. Time to move forward.” One of the major arguments we often hear about is the effects of gadgets—a huge component to change—to children. Most of the time, parents claim how negative these gadgets are. Why?

Kuchinskans, a famous writer on WebMD, said that spending hours staring at a single point can cause eye problems like Computer Visions Syndrome which causes eyestrain, blurriness and irritation. This is why a lot of kids these days wear eyeglasses. Too much time using gadgets can also lead to obesity because of the lack of physical activities. It also causes weak family ties because rather than spending an entire day bonding with relatives, kids prefer gaming through gadgets. They encounter certain information, images and videos they shouldn’t. The internet is an open space, allowing kids to click on random websites that aren’t very suitable for their age. Another concern is the numerous games promoting violence.

A 9-year-old cousin of mine has a tablet containing games that requires guns, knives and killing. What’s worse is that he has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and his parents worry the possibility of him imitating these characters he see online. However, despite of these negative effects, we must accept the fact that gadgets also have their positive effects to children. Preventing a child from using gadgets can be compared to a lion who has been petted since birth and is suddenly exposed to wildlife after 3 years. Lions need to be exposed at a young age in order to figure out how to survive. If not, they will die the moment you set them free. As I said in my introduction, nothing in this world is permanent.

Change is vital, and the world, these past few years, has been dependent to technology. In this generation, being technologically illiterate is a hindrance to progress. Gadgets made learning so much easier for children. Observe your surroundings and you can hear 4 year olds having a full-blown conversation with fellow children in English. It’s amazing. I see some of my cousins watching YouTube videos handled by Europeans or Americans. They become diverse and flexible, allowing them to open their eyes to other cultures and practices, increasing their knowledge. At the end of the day, we all have our own perspectives and opinions. One thing’s for sure though and it is this: gadgets or technology in general has never been negative.

People just don’t know how to use it well. Do not stop kids from expanding their knowledge. Allow them to grow and develop because this is how the world is now. We must learn and bloom from it. What they really need is proper discipline, guidance, and making them realize what their priorities should be.
