Prayer isn’t widely known in many schools across the nation. Prayer has been around as early as 5,000 years ago but, in 1962 prayer was removed from the public school systems. Public prayer should be something that is allowed in schools to help improve education and daily lives, leads others to find a religion, and most importantly, banning public prayer is unconstitutional and is against our rights as a citizen of the United States.
Since public prayer has been removed from the majority of schools in America, the quality of education and morals has diminished tremendously. According to the website, All About History, statistics show that there has been an increase in school shootings, teen pregnancies, increase in drug use, teen suicides, and lower SAT scores. For example, “in less than 18 years, we have already seen more deaths related to school shootings than in the whole 20th century” (Rapid Rise in Mass School Shootings in the United States, Study Shows.). These facts show how much of an impact prayer can have on people’s lives, and how important it is to be able to hold prayer in a school environment. School prayer can help prevent these issues and could instill a sense of morality in children.
Many people who attend public schools may not believe in the same religion as others or have any belief at all. According to the Pew Research Center, 38% of high school students are not affiliated with a certain religion (Educational Distribution). Having an open prayer in school it helps this percentage of students be introduced to something that they might be looking for in their life. Even if they may not feel comfortable with the idea of public prayer, it is their choice to listen or not. Being surrounded by believers in religion has proven to potentially help people if they are not quite sure where they stand in their faith.
Not allowing the act of freedom of religion in public schools is unconstitutional. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is a part of the Bill of Rights that elaborates on the fact that it protects freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press, and the right to petition. In the late sixteenth century the people of England were offended because of the way religion was forced on them, which created an issue that is still talked about today (Church of England). Having religious freedom allows people to believe what they would like and act on their own beliefs, including praying. Prohibiting public prayer disobeys many American documents such as the Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, National Anthem, and many more.
Public prayer in school helps with the improvement of education, people’s lives, and is also a big part of the United States and its constitution. People don’t realize the importance that prayer has on everyone and everything. Therefore, prayer should be allowed in every school to help improve today’s society and to make the world a better place.
