Public Speaking As a Challenge Throughout My Life

Public Speaking has always been a challenge with me throughout my life. Ever since I was a kid, I always hated speaking in front of a big audience. I remember when I was in fourth grade in middle school, I had to give a report on the state of Indiana and present it in front of the whole class. I was so nervous and scared that I asked my teacher can I only present my report in front of my close friends instead of the whole classroom.

Since I asked her in advance she said yes.

I remember being happy and relieved. Also, I remember when I was 10 years old and I had to give a simple Easter speech at church. I remember like it was yesterday, I just stood there and cried. As I got older my public speaking had gotten worse. Every time I would present a speech I would overthink and get nervous. I always wondered why I always get nervous why does my heart race fast every time.

It wasn’t until I was 17 years old. My mom took me to the doctors. While I was at the doctor’s, they told me I had Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a person who excessive worry about a lot a different thing. Generalized Anxiety Disorder didn’t just affect me with public speaking it affects me with taking exams, going to work. Sleeping, etc. When I found out I had to take a public speaking class in college my heart dropped.

I thought of the worst and avoided it. It wasn’t until my sophomore year I was scheduling for my classes for next semester my advisors told me I should take public speaking. He told me I can’t keep avoiding it, so I need to take it my junior year. I was frustrated and embarrassed because I didn’t want to be the only junior in a public speaking class with a bunch of freshmen.

So, successfully my roommates Kayla and Danielle still had to take a public speaking class. We all agreed to take a public speaking class together. Our first speech was the narrative speech. The narrative speech was telling a true event story. My story was the day I got fined and didn’t know about it. I was super nervous and scared. I knew what I needed to improve on my eye contact, speaking up louder, not overthink everything and stay calm. Our second speech was concept speech. This speech was defining a concept related to your major or perhaps a higher education in general. My concept speech was children’s toys do not have to be gender stereotyped. In my opinion, I feel that I did bad on this speech. I didn’t practice that much, and I was frustrated when I did my speech. I learned that if you practice as much as you will get better. I also learned if you stay calm and take deep breaths you won’t be as nervous.

Our third speech was the progress report speech. The progress speech was to describe the long-term project and are standard in all the professions and organizations. My progress speech was how my Job got more teens to Altimate Air trampoline park. Our final speech was the persuasive speech. The persuasive speech is to change your audience’s attitudes, actions, and beliefs about a topic of your choice. My persuasive speech was about why people should adopt kids. This speech was one of my favorite speeches. Conclusion My goal was to get better at my speeches and not be as nervous. Another goal was not to procrastinate, prepared myself, and practice. I believe I got better at my speeches. I still get nervous when I have to public speak but it’s not as bad as I used to be.

I believe that our in-class activities help a lot. Breathing helps me improve my public speaking. According to the public speaking handbook “Nervous speakers tend to take short, shallow breaths. To help this anxiety induced breathing pattern, consider taking a few slow, deep breaths before you rise to speak. No one will be able to detect that you are taking deep breaths if you just slowly inhale and exhale. Besides breathing deeply, try to relax your entire body. Deep breathing and visualizing yourself as successful will help you.”
