Reflection On Experience Using The Driscoll’s Model

Categories: CareerSuccess

A reflective methodology is helpful when we want to have a meaningful learning. According to Hinett (2002), learning doesn’t only come from doing something, but also reflecting what we do and this enables us to draw on the past and present and direct ourselves into a better future. It allows us to think deeply and holistically about situations or events. Assuredly this leads to greater learning and insights to practice. For this purpose, I’m going to refer to Driscoll’s model of reflection.

In associating the three components of Driscoll’s reflection model: “What? So what? and Now what?” with my working experience as an intake commander in the army, the framework explains how we can become better: “What” (reviewing a situation and exploring what happened), “So what” (criticizing the experience: what was good and bad from the situation) and “Now what” (future actions for similar situation). So what have I learned from the experience? This practice of reflection will allow me to review the situation through experience, area that needs for development to forge a better way to respond to a similar scenario in the future.

As a military, we are nurtured to the core values of Royal Brunei Armed Force which are (Piety, Faithful, Courageous, Professional) and share the same mission and vision. However, every station/unit has different objectives, operations and situations. To begin, let me raise up two situations that I encountered at my work place: The shortage of man power in my station/unit and assigned to a not subject matter expert as an instructor.

Drawing from knowledge and experience gained on those situations, first, I learned that it is more important to just continue working and improving the work flows or even try restructuring to amend the situation shortage of man power. For one thing, to kick up a fuss on performing extra duties will not aid any progress to the work (this relates to my second point in the next paragraph). As a result, it is natural for a staff officer to want to manage and strive in improving its productivity. Being an instructor for four years, I have observed that officers in my station/unit tasking quality are top notch. But for how long this situation can wear and tear them? If situation remains the same in the long run, work effectiveness might be affected in order to keep up with addressed tasks and orders. In a military organization, I think we should not overlook the work effectiveness of a station/unit but also to consider the efficiency as well.

Being effective is about doing the right things, while being efficient is about doing things right. Missing one of these elements in a workplace can results to the undesired work performance. Conversely, it can have negative impacts on the Royal Brunei Armed Force to seize its vision, “to deliver robust, responsive and resource efficient armed force”. This unwanted situation can result officers losing their competitive edge and suffer from poor admin management, thus results in national decline. The next thing that I learned from the experience is that for any length of time, I can be assigned to a task that I do not agree with for instance doing a job that is not my field of specialty. This is a fact of life. In situation particularly as a staff officer, unfortunately, I must not complain about the task at hand, but to execute to the highest level of my ability. Even if there is dissention, once orders is passed on, it is no longer up for discussion and it must be carried out in anyway. This goes back to the features outlined in the RBAF core values. However, the drawback from this is that the officers become a “yes-man” where supposedly it is to cultivate members of “true believers” and simultaneously, their skills and talent will be blunt and wasted.

CONCLUSION

With the stated situations in mind, I have also looked for other solutions and getting advices from higher officers. The best for now is that maintaining the solid relationship between members and other sections to excel and strive the same goals effectively and efficiently. So as the saying goes “Never leave your brother behind”.
