Years ago before most people had smartphones, families would gather around the table during dinner and talk about the days events. Nowadays children and teenagers are busy on their smartphones while their parents are preoccupied online for work or other entertainment purposes. American adults spend on average about eleven hours a day online. The interest in social media, texting and use of smartphones hinders relationship with people. Television and multimedia entertainment is another cause of this effect on relationships. Another of the many electronics are computer. This exploitation of technology has made it harder for humans to form close relationships with others because of social media, television and multimedia, computers, and an abundance of other distractions.

Social media and the use of smartphones does have a negative effect on relationships. A study taken at Elon University shows, “More than 62% of individuals observed on Elon’s campus continue to use mobile devices in the presence of others.” The statistic proves that there is no form of communication to create a relationship. The bond cannot be formed without getting to know the person. Social media has made people lose communication skills making it harder for them to express their thoughts clearly. Social media even has its effects on romantic relationships causing 1 in 5 divorces in the United States.

Television and multimedia distracts people from fostering their relationship. An example is, binge watching a television show. It takes time away from the people around you. According to a survey done by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American spends around 2.7 hours watching TV per day, which adds up to almost 20 hours per week in total. That’s 20 hours a day that can be spent building bonds, learning more about people and improving communication skills.

Opponents disagree by claiming that technology allows for relationships to be formed through not just verbal communication. For example, through social media such as Instagram, people can put out on the web for people to see images of themselves and what they are up to. Another argument would be if the owner’s partner has access to their account, it could be easily accessed for investigation if the owner is taking advantage of the person. It causes problems within the relationship. There are also some other benefits of technology that can be argued.

In conclusion, statistics prove that technology effects relationships for the better and the worst. It is very important however, to keep communication with family and keep in touch in whatever way possible. Technology is a distraction if used at wrong times (e.g. family gatherings or other events). This prevention makes it harder for people to form relationships.
