Government bodies role is to act as representatives, steer the organisation into a specific direction, setting clear and realistic goals for the organisation, controlling and taking responsibility for their actions, ensuring that they guide the organisation into the right direction and managing/handling the finances in an efficient and effective way. Roles of South African Rugby Union (SARU):The government body has the responsibility to make South African Rugby important and people all over the world should have a positive image of the South African Rugby national team. SARU should be able to notice any concerns and deal with it professionally. SARU is the federation of 14 independent bodies. SARU must get people all over South Africa, regardless of the race, age, gender and have equal opportunities to participate in rugby as well as bringing fans of any colour to come together and unite them to support teams playing in the important rugby tournaments. The role of SARU is to protect the rights and interests of the players as well as to host successful rugby tournaments in the present and in the future and encourage strong involvement from people. SARU has the responsibility to develop grassroots rugby, transformation targets and develop children from school rugby to age group provincial rugby, to the baby boks, to Currie cup, Super rugby and then to the Springbok National team. It’s any child’s dream who loves rugby to put on that gold and green jersey and wear it with pride, singing the national anthem in front of thousands and millions of fans all over the world. SARU tries to improve players and build them and give people fair chances to play for these teams. SARU also manages the Players’ Fund which is identified as Charity of the Springboks, this fund suggests that people are not forgotten once they can’t participate in rugby anymore and sometimes SARU also brings the current springbok’s team to compete with the past springbok team for charity which brings entertainment and unites South African’s in Rugby’s caring hands. Vision and Mission of SARU:SARU wants to address the issue of race because there was said to be too many whites in SARU’s colour mix. The vision of SARU is to increase involvement/participation of blacks for up to 50% of black participation in SARU domestic competitions. The SARU domestic competitions include the Vodacom cup, Currie Cup, Super Rugby and the Springbok teams. This allows increased involvement from people all over and allows fans and players to come together and eliminate racism. SARU also wants to develop grassroots rugby and keep children motivated and increase participation of Rugby in schools which will one day allow children to grow into strong men and participate professionally in Rugby, developing children for the future and the future of rugby is in safe hands. Mission of SARU was to address match fixing threats. To address this SA rugby formed a partnership with Swiss-based global leader to address this issue. Swiss-based global leader had data related expertise which is very important in spotting and eliminating any concerns that deal with match fixing. South Africa wants to be the best of the nation and they formed this partnership to deal with such issues. SARU had an agreement with the anti-doping regulations which encourages people not to be involved with doping. SARU wants to build competitive rugby teams for the future. (Rugby365. com, 2018).
Benefits of adhering to good governance:There will be strong leadership and great responsibility between members of a governing body. Good governance encourages positive behaviour, and members will take interests into consideration. It reduces the cost of capital and expenses because a good government system reliable and able to manage difficulties and come out stronger. It increases involvement in a country and increases investment as well, increases involvement of fans and players. Good governance also decreases crime and corruption in a country, people who are committed and maintain excellent government practice, corruption and risks will be reduced. (Anon, 2018).
Disadvantages of poor governance: There will be a lack of leadership and members won’t take responsibility for their actions. It increases corruption which is bad for the nation and it will create a bad image of South African rugby. Interests will be ignored, and capital costs will be increased because members are unreliable and not committed. Poor governance will lead to poor economic growth.
