School Shootings in the US have moved from Perfunctory to being a predominant topic in the US over the past decade. However, authority and the whole nation are still questioning why the US has undertaken 57 times as many school shootings as the other industrialized nations combined. The US has experienced two hundred and eighty-eight school shootings since 2008; while Canada and France have only experienced two. In 2018 there were 18 school Shootings and 113 victims killed in school shootings. Michelle Bora wrote an article called “What characteristics are common among school shooters?” She says that the typical profile of a school shooter is a Caucasian Male coming from a rural community.” In addition, the California Healthy Kids Survey says the biggest thing that all school shooters have in common is that “school shooters show no shame or guilt after they go through with these terrible acts.” Due to the increasing rate of school shootings every year; many believe a better system must be implemented in recognizing the warning signs and attacking them right away (Wilson).
From a young age school, shooters show signs such as violence with their family pets, siblings, and parents. School shooters often come from troubled families. They study how to build bombs and learn how to buy, own and receive guns. Also, have a collection of weapons like knives; their obsession with weapons is excessive. They lack emotional intelligence and from a young age are socially incompetent. The only “friends” they have are those who have the same views as them. These perpetrators are hesitant to learning and thinking rationally. Although their irrational with their words and violent acts they are known to be intelligent beyond measure (Springer). A perfect example of this is two men that were responsible for the Columbine High School massacre, Dylan Klebold and Michael Carneal. They were both in a program for gifted children and had an IQ off the charts. (Television) School shooters flourish on violence and lack all sense of consequence. Kraft says in his article on “school shooting violence” that ”Medical experts note the traits of school shooters include depression and a fascination with violence”. They often express these violent manners through a creative process. The statistics in the United States show that silence when individuals acknowledge these obscure signs and actions will not work (Stapleton).
Research has shown that there is a connection between gun laws in the U.S and the High rate of school shootings in the US(Geher). Many believe our schools are toxic and are continuing to avoid the mental disturbances a school shooter shows early on. For example, on February 14th, 2018 Nikolas Cruz who was a former student at Stoneman Douglas High School, opened fire on his former classmates. He killed 17 people and 17 others were also hurt. According to the media, authority missed the many warning signs that Nikolas Kruz showed. On February sixth, a neighbors son reported that Cruz posted a picture of himself on Instagram saying he was going to shoot up the school. A police officer who responded to this has found the knives and BB gun he had. This was reported to the school resource officer nine days before the school shooting. On September 28th, 2016; A former friend of Nikolas also reported that he tried to commit suicide by drinking gasoline and that he was also cutting himself. During one of his counseling sessions “Mr. Cruz stated he plans to go out and buy a gun. However It is unknown what he is buying the gun for,”(investigators wrote). Students also noticed the Nazi symbol on his book bag and were concerned. In September 2017, a YouTube star in Mississippi reported to the FBI that a male named Nikolas Cruz wrote on his channel saying “I’m going to be a professional school shooter”(Cruz). On January Fifth, 2018, a close person to Cruz contacted the FBI to express their concerns about Cruz, they also mentioned the number of weapons he had. On February 14th Nikolas Cruz Killed fourteen students and three teachers with an AR-15. Two days following the tragedy the FBI realized that the call a close person to Cruz made on January 5th was taken too lightly. “The Jan. 5 caller provided information about “Cruz’s gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting”((Maines, O’Matz). Even from a younger age, Cruz was known as the kid with a bad temper, who also found fun in torturing animals. “He killed squirrels with a pellet gun. He stole neighbors’ mail. He tried to get his dog to attack and bloody the pet piglets being raised in the house across the street. He picked fights with other kids constantly, biting one kid’s ear”(Wan, Sullivan Berman). Cruz also showed signs of depression after losing one of the only people he was actually close with, his mother. “There is a strong correlation between depression and anxiety and school shooters”(Walz) There were many red flags missed with Cruz that many believe should have been taken care of as soon as they occurred.
On January 29th, 1979, Brenda Spencer opened fire at Grover Cleveland Elementary School killing two men and injuring eight children and a police officer. When a reporter asked Brenda why she shot at the kids she replied with ‘I don’t like Mondays.’ In her trial it came out a year earlier Brenda tried to shoot at the same school one year earlier with a BB gun. She was only but on probation for this. Her probation officer recommended that she get admitted into a mental hospital because of her actions and the signs she was showing to her counselors and teachers at school. She showed signs of depression and being suicide. “Spencer’s father refused to permit for his daughter to be admitted to a psych hospital, claiming that he could deal with the suicidal thoughts and the depression himself”(Serena). Since there is a strong correlation between, mental health issues and school shooters; this could have been prevented had her father listened to her parole officer. She also claimed to be physically and sexually abused by her father which is where she said most of her anger comes from. She practiced beheading dolls when she was younger which scared everyone away from her, leaving her with no friends growing up(Finnegan). Her father gave her a rifle as her birthday present, which is what she used in the school shooting. There was much sign that Brenda showed growing up such as beheading dolls, the behavior and effect of her father. Also, the biggest one being that she tried to shoot at the school the year before with a BB gun.
