America has been slowly but surely making efforts to stop school shootings with the Red Flag Law being one of them. The Red Flag Law, which is a gun control law that permits police or family, or members to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves. ( It’s not a law in every state, but states have the option to provide grants for implementation. The Red Flag Law is mostly to prevent suicide, but it can also help with school shootings. After the Sandy Hook shooting people from the community of Newton, Connecticut created the Sandy Hook Promise in 2013. Their purpose is “To unite people from all over to protect young children from gun violence” ( After the Parkland shooting students led March for Our Lives to prevent gun violence in the United States in Washington, D.C. with over 1 million participants. It eventually turned into an organization whose mission is “To harness the power of young people across the country to fight for sensible gun violence prevention policies that save lives” (

The Red Flag Law is currently a law in 17 states, including D.C., and 12 states are in the works of making it a law. However, states like Colorado don’t support the law, but for the most part, The Red Flag Law is making progress. So far the Sandy Hook Promise has created the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System, Launched the “Tomorrow’s News” PSA, Created the “Start with Hello” social inclusion program, etc. These programs are being taught in school, and at events so it’s really helping people see the problem.

It all starts at home with the parents because they have the biggest influence on their kids. Parents need to give their kids a loving environment to grow up in because as scary as the world is they need to have someone to turn to. In a lot of these school shooting cases, the perpetrators get guns from home. If parents are going to have guns in the house the kids shouldn’t know of their existence at all. Another common factor is mental health since most of these perpetrators have mental health issues such as anxiety. I don’t think anybody realizes how important mental health is until it affects them or a person close to them. It’s not taken seriously like other diseases such as cancer, but it should be. If kids are having problems in their everyday life mentally they should seek help immediately because if not it will eat them alive. Lastly, social media and bullying are a big factor in sending these kids over the edge. Kids should be taught at school, and at home to be nice to everyone because you don’t know what they’re going through outside of school. Social media is very toxic so kids should learn to use it wisely, know the consequences, or just not use it at all. School shootings are very much still happening though, and even if progress is being made it’s not enough.
