For many years, children that have grown up within a single parent household have been considered different. Having to take care of children as a single parent seems almost impossible, yet it has become much more prevalent in our lives today.

In today’s society, many children have grown and become extremely successful and stable, with only one parent showing them the rocky path that bestows upon all human beings. Instead, the problem lies within the difference of children who are raised with two parents, versus those who are not. Does a child even need two parents? Does a young girl need a mother figure in her life? This idea has become a very appealing argument as time has progressed. What people need to understand is that guiding a child through their life does not revolve around the structure of the family, but should be more focused on the values that are taught to these children, and the process that they adhere to as they learn to mature. A child that is raised in a home with only one parent to guide them is equally successful mentally, behaviorally, and socially as a child that is raised in a home of two parents.

Some claim that the only way for a child to become advanced in emotional and behavioral skills is to be raised by both a mother and a father. With a topic like this, it is nearly impossible to link it all back to the idea that it’s due to only being raised by one parent. In the article, “Effects of Single Parent Families on Juvenile Delinquency”, the author Angel Bower states, “Children who grow up in single-parent households are more likely to have behavior problems because they tend to lack economic security and adequate time with parents”. The idea that criminals are made from single-family households is absurd. The author must understand that it can be incredibly difficult to raise a child, or children, on your own. A single parent not only has to work a full time job to provide for them, but also be able to provide for their children. This may seem almost impossible to some, but it can be done.

As this subject continues to be looked down upon, people need to begin to notice that single parent are becoming more and more common in our world today. Since 2000, the percentage of children living in single family homes started at 30%, but in 2016, has grown to be 35%. Although this may not seem to be a particularly huge jump, the number of children living in single family home has gone from 19 million to 25 million, which is quite frankly, a scary statistic. This is saddening because it shows how little idea and faith that can be put into a relationship before actually deciding to have children. Sadly, not all single parents take the time to perform the vital tasks needed to take care of their children. Parents who thought that they could never provide the amount of emotional stability for themselves and their parents should have taken the time to think that through before deciding to become a parent. Although there is understanding with the idea that accidents can happen, most parents know what is at stake when agreeing to become a parent. There are many ways to enhance the well-being of your child, as long as you simply apply yourselves as parents.

The author later states that, “Boys that do not have fathers as male role models suffer especially”. Although I am a girl, I can say that although it is important to have a parent that can relate to you more easily around, there are other ways of teaching children life lessons that they can use in the future.

I know from personal experience that the message that this author conveys is wrong, or misleading. I come from a split family home where I don’t get to see my mother very often, I can say that it may have been somewhat difficult, but I had many other positive female roles in my life to help guide me. Anytime that my father had to step up to support us kids, my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older siblings would step up to provide the help and attention we needed. Therefore, we had a great support group as we matured into young adults. Although I came to find how hard it is for a single parent to meet the needs of their children, my father did the best job he could to give us knowledge that we needed to grow when my mom couldn’t be there to help out.

Not all families have the benefit to have a healthy structure. It is important for society and the government to notice this and take action. Single-parent families could be greatly helped by government-funded programs that work to assist them with childcare and finances for who must work, but still have time for their children.

Whether it’s a mother and a father, a single father, or single mother, children need guidance through the young stages of their lives. They only become a product of what they are taught at a young age and are deeply impacted by the love and compassion that is put into raising them. With whatever family structure is implied, it must be one with strong moral values, and respect that they can someday pass down themselves.
