Solar Power and a Problem of Power Shortage

Essay details

Please note! This essay has been submitted by a student.

Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaic (PV), indirectly using concentrated solar power or the combination. Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun that is harness using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaic, solar thermal energy, solar architecture.

Generation of Solar energy is one of fastest growing and most auspicious renewable energy sources of power generation all over the world. Nowadays, the electrical energy has become one of the basic needs in our daily life, which keeps its demand increasing year in year out. Fossil fuels as a major source of electrical power generation, are depleting every day, likewise, its usage raises serious concerns environmentally. These reasons motivate the development of new energy sources which are ecologically safe and renewable. Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, biomass, water, and geothermal energy sources. Amongst all these sources, solar energy has the utmost potential in the long term and is predicted to play a major role the future. It also poses as the cheapest method of generating electricity when compared with other energy sources. Solar power is the conversion of Sun’s radiation into electricity through the use of solar photovoltaic cells. This conversion takes place in the solar cell through photovoltaic effect. As said by many experts that the amount of solar energy reaching the earth is more than 10000 times the current energy consumption by man. Also said was that the power created through solar means is sufficient for one year on the entire planet, only if we could convert the 100 percent of the solar energy into electricity in one hour. Since the industrial revolution in the late 18thand early 19th centuries, society has become fixated on harvesting our limited resources for the production of industrial and consumer goods. This sole reliance reminds us that these resources are finite; consequently, at some point in the future they will run out. With this issue increasing every day as more resources are used, people across the world are seeking a solution that does not rely on our finite resources like oil, water, and even coal, focussing on environmentally friendly sources like solar and wind energy. Importance of these energy sources will continue to increase as society shifts toward renewable energy to tackle many of the environmental issues brought about by man’s historically toxic practices, like coal mining, nuclear fusion and fracking. These renewable energy sources also offer imminent financial benefits, as it becomes cheaper to produce and implement them. The figure below shows that solar energy is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources. It proffers quite an excellent solution to the issue of our ever-reducing finite resources. Solar power also brings along energy “security” because it is drawn from the earth’s most abundant resource, the sun. This portends that, solar energy will be a worthwhile option for energy as long as the sun exists.

Industries worldwide are posed with a major problem of power shortage. Also in developing countries, shortage of power is also a problem commercially and domestically. New offices have tremendous load on already existing load that was on the power generation sources. When added to rapidly increasing private and domestic demand, the situation most especially in certain urban areas becomes devastating. Man’s ability to consume power is incresing faster than our ability to supply power. Under such conditions, failure will occur unpredictably and without any warning due to the stresses on the inadequate sources of power. This creates the need for alternative source of power, which could fill in the gap and cover the lapses of power supply. The solar system is no new name in the world, solar systems has been in existence since last century, but has undergone various modifications and improvement over the years. In the 20 century electrical energy power generation become very important and one of the basic needs in daily life. The increase in demand of electrical energy electricity brought above various researches on how to generate electricity which is renewable and ecologically safe for human consumption. Solar energy system of generating electricity is one of the fastest growing, most depended, hazard free, renewable energy.
