Solid waste management is the process of collecting, storing, treatment and disposal of solid wastes in such a way that they are harmless to humans, plants, animals, the ecology and the environment generally. Waste management is the science that deals with prevention and monitoring of wastes. All of us are very reliable for conservation of the environment. Solid wastes have become recurring features in our environment. It is no longer in doubt that the community’s environment is inundated with the challenges of un-cleared solid wastes.
The poor state of waste management in the country is caused by inadequate facilities, poor funding, and poor implementation of policies as well as wrong lifestyle. The unhealthy disposal of solid waste is one of the greatest challenges facing our environment. In fact, solid waste poses various threats to public health as well as the environment especially when it is not appropriately collected and disposed. The poor state of waste management in barangay, or most especially in the cities or even other places is caused by inadequate facilities, poor funding, and poor implementation of policies as well as wrong lifestyle. The problem of effective solid waste management has to do with poor social services delivery efforts which cause unnecessary delays in solid waste clearance. It is either broken down machinery, non-maintenance of dumpsters, poorly maintained urban streets and roads and irregularities in the designation of sanitary landfill sites. Evidence of this can be seen into the drains and streets which could increase or develop more health and environmental problems. It is believed that the waste disposal habit of the people, corruption, work attitude, inadequate plants and equipment among others are the major factors militating against effective solid waste management. In order to address this issue there are solutions to reduce waste, such as recycling. Therefore it is advised to dispose solid wastes at a specific place or labeled trash bins.
People can also manage solid waste by reducing and reusing them which is the best preferred method when managing the wastes. Applying these methods in a daily basis can do a lot and slowly reduce waste. Such impacts are reduction or prevention of emission of harmful greenhouse gas, and amount of pollutants released in the air does also reduce. Therefore due to the benefits of these methods we should however adopt and start using them when managing wastes. Manufacturing companies should encourage the consumers or customers to bring their own reusable for packaging and also the public should be given priority to choose reusable products. This reduces the amount of waste to be disposed in the environment after the consumption of those products. In conclusion, all the stalk holders should educate the public on the importance of conserving environment by managing solid wastes. By educating people, they will learn the impacts which one can benefits through managing wastes. It is important to not only create the law but also implement that law.
