Desire and morality are the deepest forces of human nature. In Macbeth, it’s widely believed that Macbeth’s tragedy was due to insane ambition. But Lady Macbeth’s tragic ending is more complex than Macbeth’s, all elements of which are due to her the perceptual and the rational twists. When we carefully remove “the fog” and analyze Lady Macbeth, everything will become clearer.
First, When Lady Macbeth received a message from her servant, her idea of killing Duncan was decided, “That summons thee to heaven or to hell and she was absolute, indicating that this desire had always existed and it was only an opportunity to implement. It is also for Macbeth，witches and Lady Macbeth just give him a chance. The desire source is from Macbeth’s heart. Then we can clearly believe she had the same ambitions as Macbeth, and it was these desires that led them astray. From “Which shall to all our nights and days to come/ Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom we can know this tragedy is from Lady Macbeth proposed and encouraged Macbeth to kill Duncan in order to get the crown. Her great ambition can be seen in her words and when Macbeth said “If it were done when ’tis done, then ‘twere well/ It were done quickly it means Lady Macbeth do a successful encouragement. After killing Duncan, Macbeth panicked. “Infirm of purpose!”. On the contrary, Lady Macbeth was the calm one, even though it was a hypocritical shell, but at the same time it showed that she was ambitious at the moment and did not regret killing Duncan.
Second, her psychological quality is not as strong as Macbeth, which leads to self-reproach of her inner humanity and eventually madness. After killing Duncan and gaining the throne, “To know my deed ‘twere best not know myself.” Macbeth is nervous but he already knows that nothing can be undone. At that time, Lady Macbeth still isn’t admit but there is already anxiety in her heart. What Lady Macbeth did was just cover himself up palely. And when she can’t endure all kinds of pressures, the real nervous heart will be shown. Also because women’s emotions, those self-accusations eventually oppress her bottom line, even more at that time there is no Macbeth to help her to disappear these bad emotions. It leads to sleepwalking every night, repeating the scene she feared most, she wants to clean the color and smell of blood on her hands like that time’s Macbeth, she also wants to clean the shadow around her mind and finally at this random she can’t control her own spirit, she going mad and dead. “Here’s the smell of the blood still: all the/ perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little/ hand. Oh, oh, oh!” But actually her fragile mind has been shown when Macbeth find Banquo’s ghost at the banquet. Lady Macbeth still used her already fragile shell to drive others away. When they were together in private, she no longer pretended to reprimand Macbeth, but pushed everything to sleep deprivation. “You lack the season of all natures, sleep.” At this change, they go to two opposite extreme, it makes Macbeth more crazy and stubborn, but increased the pressure on Lady Macbeth.
Third, They only broke through the class, but did not break through the inequality between men and women at that time. In fact, Lady Macbeth is extremely cowardly and humble, her status is very low, she does not control everything that really belongs to her ambition, she have not her mind. Her emotions can’t overcome reason. She’s not independent. She’s dependent on Macbeth. When we realize this, everything becomes explicable, but it complicates the times. After Macbeth find Banquo’s ghost, in private space, she did not ask Macbeth what had happened, nor did she stop him from scolding him. She lost her original independent shell, the fake shell. Lady Macbeth could do nothing but comfort. Because at that moment she was no longer so rational, and fear and anxiety began to ferment. She just can say “You lack the season of all natures, sleep.” In fact, in the whole drama, Lady Macbeth almost always appeared with Macbeth. Whether it’s her greatest ambition or her mind breakdown, it’s all about Macbeth. At that time, men and women were extremely unequal, and even though she encouraged Macbeth to kill Duncan, she did not interfere with much of her real behavior. This is because under the influence of the times, women’s voice is not enough to support the whole world, even if Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have enough love. It also reflects the prejudice and behavior of the society at that time. Both men and women believed that men were dominant and lacked the independence of women. We can know it from the death of Lady Macbeth. When Lady Macbeth died, even though Macbeth had feelings for Lady Macbeth, it was the only emotion after several deaths. It’s a complicated mood. “Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player.
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage”. First, it is expressing that Macbeth is going to the ‘desire hell’ because of Lady Macbeth’s death. It also means everything is not important to Macbeth, even if Lady Macbeth’s emotional thoughts are totally dependent on Macbeth all his life. I personally believe this is the cause of all this. The toughness no longer exists. I even began to pity this sad woman. An idea that starts with a fever in the mind and ends up paying a terrible price for it.
And the reasons for Lady Macbeth’s insanity may lie in us. The tragic ending of Lady Macbeth reflects more human and social realities. These complex emotions and desires, more real, will give the audience a greater impact, and this character is the most worthy of consideration. These delicate truths still appear in today’s society, such as men and women are not equal, ambition and desire are too full, emotional and rational antagonism. Shakespeare put Macbeth in a dramatic era, in order to show these dramatizing and cruel the truth.
