Over the course of the semester, we have taken a look at the history of communication technology and how the development of this equipment has shaped our society. In my personal opinion, these advancements are ones that have truly between taken for granted among the Millennials and Generation Z eras. I was born into a period that was blessed with printed communication, television, the internet, and wireless communication. That said, during my twenty-five years here on earth, all of these forms of communication have seen great advancements. With these ideas considered, this document will discuss these mediums of the past, how they’ve developed into the present-day, and what the future looks like in regard to further technological progressions.

Past

My earliest memory of technology is associated with my parents as they were both very business-oriented individuals; they depend heavily on the use of communication. When I was in my adolescent years, my mom was in her mid-twenties when she owned her first mobile phone; this is unlike any phone that anyone will see today. This particular mobile device was in an unnecessarily large, black leather bag; this was the “bag phone.” This phone made its debut on April 3, 1973 by Martin Cooper, a Motorola employee in New Jersey (Seward, 2013). This new form of technology received a great amount of popularity in the business world as people were given the ability to make calls, and only phone calls, from locations without a landline.

As I grew older and entered elementary and middle school, dial-up internet became the new fad. My sister and I would race home and fight one another for access to the desktop computer. Before we did that, however, we had to grab the phone line from the wall and plug it into the computer and wait an eternity to get any type of connection. The cool thing to do during this time was to get on AOL Instant Messenger and talk with friends, update your profile, and set away messages so the people on your buddy list could know exactly what you were doing. This allowed me to stay in contact with my friends on a daily basis since cell phones weren’t really popular.

With these early encounters taken into consideration, we can see the clear-cut characteristics of convergence as illustrated by the text. That is, the integration of mass media, computers, and telecommunications (Straubhaar, J., LaRose, R., & Davenport, L., 2018). Though I didn’t see the earliest stages of these creations, what I did witness paved the way for a future full of technological advancements that would play a large part of my life. The bag phone evolved into the iPhone, and dial-up evolved into Wi-Fi; these are the changes that made the most significant impact on me.

Present

We are a part of an extremely tech-savvy society that relies heavily on communication technology. That said, these devices and advancements drive my life on a daily basis. First and foremost, I wake up to a set of three different alarms on my iPhone, followed by catching up on emails or social media notifications I may have received, and a quick check of the weather; this is before my feet even hit the floor. Since I had an iPhone, I decided to purchase a MacBook Pro as well as an iPad; the cloud allows me to access any and all of my information or documents from whichever device I choose. This has made life in both school and work extremely easy and convenient.

When considering the aspects of life in which communication technology serves best, I believe it is safe to say that it has made my collegiate success achievable. First, I’ve been given the ability to carry all of my books to class without even carrying a single book as they are stored on my laptop. These E-books are book content that are stored in a digital text format, as defined by the text (Straubhaar, J., LaRose, R., & Davenport, L., 2018). Furthermore, the internet has given me the ability to communicate quickly and efficiently with both peers and professors alike; this is pertinent when trying to meet deadlines with coursework.

With these ideas considered, I don’t wish that things were different. The fact of the matter is, technology is constantly evolving, and it isn’t going anywhere any time soon. These inventions have made life much easier when it comes to organizing coursework, completing assignments, and everyday tasks in general. That said, the technology I’ve embraced in the present has been a key staple to the accomplishments that I’ve made; I’m eager to see what the future holds in this regard.

Future

One recent advancement in communication technology that has left me feeling a bit concerned is the idea of personalized advertising. In summary, companies and corporations utilize data that is collected from web users. This data, based on their browsing habits, is then channeled in order to make ads more relevant and appealing to the customer; this has caused the world of personalized advertising to become a touchy subject (Komando, 2017). According to David Kirkpatrick of the Marketing Dive, 71% of consumers actually prefer personalized ads (2016). The idea behind this is to create personalized announcements to enhance customer engagement. That said, I fall somewhere within the other 29% who are strongly opposed with this technology simply because I view them as annoying and an invasion of privacy.

After a bit of research, I stumbled across an article that stated there are blueprints in place for a 5G network. According to Forbes Magazine, this new technology has the potential to be nearly ten times faster than the 4G platform (DeMers, 2017). Sources say that this will include very high frequencies with massive bandwidths. Furthermore, this will be able to provide a “universal high-rate coverage, accompanied by a seamless user experience” (Yu, H., Lee, H., & Jeon, H., 2017). Since my daily life is heavily dependent on the use of the internet, mainly my iPhone, I am highly intrigued by the high-speed capabilities that this internet has to offer. As if 4G wasn’t quick enough, 5G is likely to bring about a whole new meaning to internet browsing.

Reflection

As the semester comes to an end and graduation is just a few days away, I can’t help but to think about how I will use communication technology in my upcoming career in the professional world. I believe that it is safe to say that the evolution that I’ve witnessed has done nothing short of prepare me for the future. From the bag phone and dial up, to the iPhone and 5G potential, I believe that these changes will continue to make life easier, especially in the business world. Instead of resisting, I will embrace the new changes that come about and use these tools to my advantage in my future endeavors as a sales associate for Cargill Agricultural Supply Chain. I will use this technology to communicate with customers and coworkers alike, just as I have with my peers and instructors throughout my collegiate years.

Conclusion

When I initially began working with the content in this course, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Communication technology is a popular topic in the media today in regard to the internet, social media, politics and the news. That said, this course has driven me to think outside the box. Furthermore, it has allowed me to remember how much technology has evolved, not only in my lifetime, but in the years before me as well. These technological advancements have given a whole new meaning to communication technology and has forever changed the face of communication as a whole. What once started as a written letter has now evolved into a text message, email, or even live facetiming. We have the ability to both share and obtain information with people across the globe in a matter of seconds; this is truly remarkable. With these ideas considered, I can’t help but wonder what the future holds for the future of communication technology.
