The Benefits Of Going To University

Last year, I was fortunate enough to have made a decision that totally changed my life. Because of that decision, I didn’t have to wear the same clothes every single day. It also gave me a privilege of extra two hours to sleep every day. I was also given much more freedom to decide what I want to do. And most importantly, I was also allowed to use my phone in the room without having to worry about it being confiscated. It was a decision that forced me to become more independent and aware of my responsibilities. It was also the start of a new chapter in my life’s journey that I believe has made me become a better person.

According to the Guardian UK newspaper in 2017, there are almost half of all young people in England going on to higher education, and the reason why more young people are going to university is because they think it can lead to a rewarding life.

Thus, today I would like to share with you the three benefits you can gain from a university, which are improving your knowledge, enhancing your soft skills, and being able to achieve self-independence.

Since I have given an overview, let’s start with the first benefit that you can get if you go to university.

I believe some of you must have been wondering why going to university would greatly improve your knowledge. I can tell you personally that over the past few months, I have gained more knowledge than I’ve ever had in secondary school. One of the things that make a university different from a secondary school is that students will acquire a specific knowledge by studying a particular subject they’re passionate about. With that being said, all of you are allowed in university to choose a major according to your interests and strengths, which is unlike secondary school where you only learn about general knowledge. In secondary school you also have to study various subjects that are unlikely related to your interests. For instance, when I was in secondary school, I hated it when I had to study the subjects which I never liked, such as Biology, History, and Mathematics. As I was not interested in those subjects, I was unable to gain much knowledge as I had never been focused on the lessons in class. But after entering university, I finally found the passion to study as I realized my interests in the subjects, such as Fundamental of Journalism and Media writing. As I’ve always been someone who’s passionate about news, which as a result, has made me become more knowledgeable due to my passion and interests to study. According to the International Student Survey in 2017, nearly 60 per cent of students responded that being passionate about their subject was the reason why they wanted to further their studies in university. Thus, going to university will give you all a golden opportunity to become experts in your major as you will gain more knowledge about the subject from lecturers in the field.

Another benefit you can gain from a university is that you will be able to enhance your soft skills progressively. For those of you who have no idea what soft skills are, don’t worry, this is because we will have little chance to learn about soft skills in secondary school. But what are soft skills and why they are important to us? Soft skills usually relate to our communication skills, team-working skills, creativity, and problem-solving skills. When you go to work someday, these soft skills will determine the level of our success in our career as we need to know how to interact with other people. According to a report by the McDonald’s Backing Soft Skills campaign in 2015, around 97 per cent of UK employers responded that soft skills are vital to their business. And more than 50 per cent of them think communication and team-work skills are important. Over the year, I also have personally interviewed some of my seniors, and almost 80 per cent of them told me that going to university helps them a lot in enhancing their communication skills. They also said that they were extremely nervous in speaking in front of the public before. But after entering university, they are now much more confident to speak publicly because university always trains them through presentations and other courses. Moreover, all of you will also have the opportunity to effectively enhance your team-work skills by going through group assignments. I still remember that there was a time when I had some disagreements with my team-mates during a group assignment. But we know that if we want to get our job done, we have to come together and be united. In the end, we’ve successfully resolved our differences by listening to each other carefully and finding a way for us to arrive at a consensus. Therefore, I can assure all of you that going to university will more likely help you enhance your soft skills than secondary school.

As far as the third benefit is concerned, going to university to achieve self-independence can be a reasonable reason for students to go university to further their studies. I‘m pretty sure that most of you here have always been preciously taken care of by your parents since you were born, and of course, that includes myself. But do you know what it would be like when you move away from your parents to further your studies in university? It might be the first time for the majority of students to be away from their hometowns to live on residence. With that being said, it is a great opportunity for you to learn how to live on your own and how to become more independent in a preparation for your future lives. You will also learn about your responsibilities towards your families, the community, and yourselves. In the last few months, I have greatly learned about life-lesson as I began my university life. I had to start learning about managing my time, cooking meals, doing the laundry, and making my own decisions. Those are the things that I had never gotten the chance to do as they were always taken care of by my parents while living at home. But after entering university and living on my own, I finally realized that life has never been easy as I thought. It was also a decision that made me realize my responsibilities which I was never aware of. Therefore, going to university to achieve self-independence can be a great opportunity for you to open a new chapter of your lives. And most importantly, we can also proudly tell our parents that we’ve grown up.

In conclusion, let’s take a look back at the three benefits that have been mentioned above. It has been proven that going to university would greatly improve your knowledge as you will be studying a particular subject in depth. Moreover, all of you will also get the opportunity in university to enhance your soft skills, which includes communication skills and team-working skills that can be enhanced through presentations and group assignments. The final benefit of studying in university is that you will likely be more independent in a preparation for your future lives as you’re away from your parents to live on residence.

Therefore, since I have spoken so far, you all must have an idea about how to get those benefits. Yes! The answer is “Go to university”! As Malcolm X once said that “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” So it’s time for you to make this significant decision because we only live once! , I am confident that you’re never going to regret as it will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made in your lifetime.
