“Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

What makes somebody kick, punch, injure or shoot a firearm at another person or even him/herself? In any case, individuals frequently commit viciousness. Youth violence has become one of the major issues teens face today, either physically or emotionally. There is no single vindication for the general rise of youth viciousness. There many factors that contribute to youth violence; the media, parental supervision, peer pressure, and the environment they live in, are just a few.

One of the major causes is the media; the influence of youth violence from the media starts at such a young age. Kids watch what we think are “cartoons” but in reality, it is giving kids an idea and reference about suicide. For example, in a 2001 Spongebob episode titled ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?; Squidward is shown to have signs of depression and scenes of him trying to kill himself. Parents or guardians should be more aware of what their kid is watching. Cyberbullying; another form of violence caused by the media. Technology is advancing in a blink of an eye. In addition, bullying had also advanced. Cyberbullying is bullying or harassing a person through the internet. Some examples of the most common type of cyberbullying are sending mean messages, spreading rumors online or through text, and posting threatening or hurtful messages on social media platforms. Cyberbullying can cause depression, anxieties, low self-esteem, and suicide. Most victims do not tell their parents or any adults when bullying occurs.

Insufficient parental supervision, another main cause of youth violence; most kids want attention from their parents and just someone to guide them. When kids are not having a parent figure, they start making poor choices such as choosing the wrong people to be friends with. The people you around will influence how you act, or what you do.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” -Martin Luther King Jr.

On the other hand, some people use violence as a form of expression. To unleash their feeling of displeasure or disappointment. They think there are no solutions to their issues and swing to brutality to express their feelings and emotions.

School fights are mainly the youth violence I have been surrounded in; most school fights occur because of the most fatuous thing. For instance, two guys got in a fight to get suspended, because all their friends did. Two girls got in a fight over lipstick. The most common thing I have noticed in every fight that occurs; kids stopped what they were doing and grabbed their phones to start recording. Just like that, fights are all over the social media platform. Frequent exposure to violence in the media can have harmful effects on youth and outcomes in using violence to solve problems.
