Feeding 7 billion people has been a challenge for scientists and farmers alike. Generating an enormous amount of food each year has had negative impacts on the environment. In order to ensure that the crops will produce and feed the populations, many pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are put into the crops. So far, these practices have been successful in pushing away pests and leaving the soil fertile. Although pesticides kill insects that negatively affect the growth of crops, beneficial insects that maintain the health of the soil are also killed off. Synthetic fertilizers could give nearby bodies of water an overabundance in nutrients and disable oxygen from reaching the water’s surface.
Agricultural scientists and consumers are two stakeholders. Agricultural scientists believe that in order to feed the world, farmers can’t have crop fail seasons. They understand that in order for the growth of the crops to be successful, they have to be protected from pests and the soil has to be enriched at all times. Although organic farming may seem like a better choice for the environment and for humans, it is still victim to the pests. Many smart consumers wish to eat healthy and be ensured that their food isn’t sprayed with pesticides. People have a mutual feeling when they know that their food is fresh and free from unnatural things. However, this goes back to making sure everyone is fed. Pesticides and synthetic fertilizers maintain the crop’s success, but destroy the environment.
One possible option to resolve this conflict is to encourage organic agriculture. Organic agriculture doesn’t allow the use of synthetic fertilizers and certain pesticides, which are harmful to the environment. In order to ensure that the crops won’t fall victim to the pests that harm the crops, farmers could use a well –known method: crop rotation. Crop rotation is a systematic approach of planting different crops each year on the same plot of land. This will maintain the soil’s fertileness and will replace the job of synthetic fertilizers. This method will also keep the pests away and protect the crops, taking the job of pesticides.
The strength of this resolution is that it will protect the environment. This will prevent waterways from having too much nutrients provided by the synthetic fertilizers that ran off from nearby farms. Insects that are beneficial to crops will not be killed off by the pesticides sprayed. Crop rotation will also maintain biodiversity. The same crop won’t be growing on the same plot of land and so animals will be able to thrive off the diverse crops. Also, because the crops will be following the organic agriculture standards issued by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the use of hormones will be limited and it won’t affect the human body.
Some weakness in this resolution is that it won’t be efficient everywhere in the world and it may fail. Not everyone can adopt such practices due to the limit of money and time, especially developing nations. Although organic agriculture may seem like a more environmental friendly practice, it could still fail. Crops could still fall victim to pests and be destroyed. This could amount to a million dollar revenue loss. Developing nations whose population is undernourished, may not be able to lose so many crops and can’t compromise between feeding their nation and practicing healthy agricultural techniques. Crops that are growing in harsh weather conditions may rely solely on time and need to grow quickly and efficiently. Also, organic products are more expensive and many may not be able to afford it. This could lead to civil disruption and people demanding the decrease of food products.
