The History Of Creation Of Volleyball & Basketball Games

Volleyball has changed a lot since its been invented. In 1917, the game changed from 21 points to 15 points per set, later on they changed it to 25 points. You could have as many players as you want on the court. In 1922 the back row couldn’t spike at all. A decade later (1932), the timeouts were 1 minute long. In 1937, multiple contacts were permitted in defense. Back then, in 1951, someone's hands could pass over the net only for a block.

In 1895 a smart man named William G.

Morgan invented the game of volleyball. When he first invented volleyball it was called “Mintonette”, because of its similarity to badminton. Later, it was called volleyball, because the point of the game is to get a volley. Morgan designed the game to be a combination of basketball (which was invented 4 years before volleyball), baseball, tennis ,and handball. Like all sports, the rules change over time. Some may be little affected, and other rules are the complete opposite of the old rules.

Now days, the set ends when someone gets to 25 points. You can’t hit two times in a row, but you can block the ball and then touch it again and it won’t be called as a double-hit. Lastly, your hair and the ball are the only things that can touch the net.

William G. Morgan was born on January 23, 1870 at Lockport, New York and died December 27, 1942 in New York. His spouse was Mary King Caldwell, and sadly later on in their marriage they decided to go their separate ways.

His two children were Lillian Morgan Hewitt and George Morgan. His parents were George Harry Morgan and Nancy Chatfield. His education was at Springfield College, Northfield Mount Hermon School.

In 1891, James Naismith created the game of basketball. He wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the University of Kansas basketball program. James Naismith was born on November 6, 1861 in Almonte, Mississippi Mills, Canada and died November 28, 1939 in Lawrence, Kansas. Basketball has changed a lot over time. Originally, there was no set rule on number of players on the court. In 1897 five players was the amount of people on the court. Initially, players weren’t allowed to re-enter the game. In 1945, you were allowed the come in and out of the game as much as you wanted.

The first basketball games were played with a soccer ball, which wasn’t good for ball handling and dribbling. Today, the men’s ball was 30” in circumference and the women’s was 29” in circumference. Originally, when a player committed two fouls they were disqualified until a goal was scored. Now, you have four fouls to use, and once you use all of them you are out till the game is over. James was first married to Maude Evelyn Sherman in 1894 then she sadly died in 1937. Then two years later he found a new spouse, but sadly he died a few months after marriage. He had five kids, three girls and two boys. Their names were Maude Ann, Margaret Mason, Helen Carolyn, John Edwin, and James Sherman. When he was younger he was an orphan and was brought up by his aunt and uncle. He graduated high school from Almonte High School, and attended McGill University.

George Hancock made this game on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. Hancock watched a man throw a boxing glove at another guy. The guy happen to have a pole in his hand and hit the glove with the pole. A reporter joking said “Play ball.” George was born on June 13, 1754 and died on July 18, 1820. George’s spouse was Margaret Hancock. He had one child named Julia Hancock. George went to Hidden Valley High School and didn’t receive notice from colleges. He then went to Hargrave Military Academy for one year. Softball is one of my favorite sports. Softball has changed a lot over time. The original softball size was sixteen inches. Today, professional softball games are twelve inches. In 1991, women’s fast pitch was in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Later on in 2012, softball was dropped in the Summer Olympics.
