Categories: Adhd

Abstract

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is not diagnosed by any medical tests but on the basis of the occurrence of certain behavioral problems (Rod, P& Haig, K 2014). I’ve been work at elementary school in 4th and 5th division about two years. I had a student who does not really concentrate on my lesson, and makes trouble with his friends. He also had been destroyed a public institution. I was willing to study about his behavior that he could not focus on direction which is school principle.

Finally, a person who observes student’s behavior from special education came to my class, she decided to move him to special education school. Throughout this research, I desire to learn and study how I can find my student who has ADHD and how I can treat them as a teacher.

Naturalistic Observation

Naturalistic observation is a research method commonly used by psychologists and other social scientists (Kendra C, 2019). Naturalistic Observation is one of the way that we can study student’s behavior.

A student who I mentioned in abstract had a problem to be pay attention during class time. I observed how he behave in my lesson. He looked like he is in the other area. The other students were answering and writing what I taught them, but then he was just sitting, staring ceiling, and sometimes acting that I could not expect.

There are several reasons why psychologists would use this method just as, there are a handful of situation where it would not be appropriate: advantages and disadvantages (Crystal A, 2019).

Several advantages are allowing researchers to directly observe individuals, giving scientists a first-hand look at social behavior, helping the external validity of a research effort, and allowing multiple of methods of data. However, it also has some advantages such as, the personal belief of psychologists.

Case Study

Case studies are in-depth investigations of a single person, group, event or community (Saul M, 2014). Since it is studying about an exact person who has the problem in psychology, people can define what it shows when person who suffers disease in psychology. It also brings advantages and disadvantages how it works. Actually, it is difficult to define how psychological problem shows symptoms. One of the major advantages of a case study is that it enables psychologists to obtain detailed descriptions and insights into aspects of an individual’s life and behaviors that cannot be gained in other ways (Rod P& Haig K, 2014). However, one of the disadvantages is that some of the data might be depends on people’s recollections, which can be inaccurate or incomplete. It only relies on a person’s particular viewpoint.

Treatment

There are many other effective treatments that can help kids with ADHD improve their ability to pay attention, control impulsive behavior, and curb hyperactivity (Jeanne S & Melinda S, 2019). Keath Low suggested some strategies for student with ADHD. For example, Classroom should be clear and concise and reviewed regularly with the student. It helps to have the student repeat back rules, expectations or other instructions to make sure they are understood. In addition, give the student frequent and immediate feedback or consequences about behaviors. On the other hand, there is the other treatment such as combining drug and behavioral treatment. A combination of Ritalin (methylphenidate) and behavioral treatment is recommended when children have severe ADHD, such as when ADHD symptoms cause a major disruption at home or in school (Barkley, 2006). However, we supposed to be careful when we using it. Because of the risk for serious side effects and the increase in Ritalin use, the Food and Drug Administration recommended that Ritalin and other similar drugs include a warning (New York Times, 2006).

Conclusion

There were two methods that teacher or researcher can define about the mental disease such as ADHD. Both of methods contain advantages and disadvantages when they study about the thing that they want. Throughout the observation or studying of case, it will show how we can treat them and what we should not do for them. It is not easy to teach student who has ADHD because their one of the main problem is concentration. Thus, teacher supposed to be ready for lesson strategies, also the best way is sending them to the professional educator who is well known about the ADHD.
