Music can easily affect people’s emotions. This article mainly talk about the influence between meditative yoga music and aggressive rap music on people’s emotion. Measurement results indicated that participants of the rap group scored significantly higher than the other groups in the dimension of verbal aggression.
Firstly, the author enumerated some people’s different views on the influence of music on emotion. Then , he tried to explain the music’s “magical” through the study by Blood and Zatorre (2001).According to research by Bornnimann et al.(2011),it appeared that ambient nature sounds could help people to recover their heart rate, respiratory sinus arrhythmia and blood pressure.Another research was about exploring the connection between music and emotional perceptions, which pointed out that a type of music could reflect a particular emotion(Ehlert et al. , 2012). Moreover, Frith (2008) went on to show that aggressive music could impact listeners with a negative emotion, but might not make them have aggressive behaviors. On the contrary, Mast et al.(2011) believed that the music with aggressive verbal lyrics may stimulate aggressive behaviors.
On this basis, the author did the research about determining the degree of music’s influence on changes in emotion. There were 75 volunteers join in this study, using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire to measure aggression among the participants. This questionnaire is a self-report,which measure four dimensions of aggression. According to the ANOVA and post-hoc analysis, the “rap group” got the highest score in the dimension of verbal aggression. Overall, the data indicated that the aggressive music could make people more emotionally aggressive, but there was no enough evidence that yoga music could reduce aggression. In addition, the author pointed out some limitations of this article. On one hand, self-reports are too subjective in measuring aggression. On the other hand, the narrow range of demographics may have contributed to the results.
At last, the author hope that in the future, as people continue to explore ,we may use music to help patient to recover instead of drug therapy.
The reason I chose this article is that I am very interested in music. When I saw this topic, it aroused my curiosity. I want to know more about the difference between the rap and relaxing yoga music. In my opinion, music is something that can connect with the soul. On one hand , when I am depressed, it would helpful for me to listen to music. On the other hand, it also would make me exciting while listening the music with fast beat. I want to know why it made me feel so magical. Another reason why I chose the text is that it used the statistical methods of variance analysis, which is a method that I want to learn. I would like to learn how to interpret the results of variance analysis by studying this paper.
Throughout the article, the author trying to tell us how different types of music affect people’s emotions. Before the study, the authors hypothesized that relaxing yoga music could reduce aggression, while fast-paced rap music could increase aggression. The results indicated that the first hypothesis was not sufficiently proven, but the aggressive music could increase emotional aggression. In the article, the writer conducted a dialectical discussion on the topic. He first made a reasonable guess on the topic, then made a considerable explanation with the data and drew a conclusion. From my point of view, he was not prejudiced.
In order to make the article more convincing, the author cited some other people’s studies to support the points. For example, he cited a number of other scholars who have studied the topic of how music affects people, and he tried to make his own hypothesis more objective and reasonable. In addition,he supported his second hypothesis with Besson et al.(2011) Frith’s (2008) research and used Mast and McAndrew’s findings to compare with them.
Based on the research of other scholars, the author also made a survey and drew some conclusions by using an ANOVA and post-hoc analysis.Firstly,he used Buss-Perry questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992) to conduct a sample survey. According to the data, he found that the “rap group” scored higher than “no music” group in the dimension of verbal aggression. Besides, the author took a screenshot of results of the data analysis.
Although the writer gave evidence to his conclusion, I could not agree with him completely. Because I think his investigation had the following limitations:
