Sex Education is a high-quality teaching and learning that helps people gain the information, skills, and motivation to make healthy decisions about sex and sexuality. It aims to develop and strengthen the ability of children and young people to make conscious, satisfying and respectful choices regarding their relationships, sexuality and emotional ang physical health. Despite this subject is talking about sex, it doesn’t mean that it encourages the children and young people to have sex. Instead it helps people to build a strong foundation for your sex life.
Although many schools have included sex education as part of their curriculum, it remains a controversial issue in several countries, particularly in the Philippines.
In the Philippines, sex education has been hindered and looked down because of the beliefs of the Catholic Churches. The Catholic Churches assume that sex education in the school will lead to promiscuity. Promiscuity and sex before marriage is directly against to the core value of the Catholic belief system.
Therefore, the sex education in the Philippines have been strongly opposed and have not been implemented. As a result, this cause many teenagers and sexually active individuals to be unaware of basic knowledge that can protect them from the dangers of sexually transmitted and unplanned parenthood. Additionally, this lack of sex education cause serious problem in the economy and housing industry because of the overpopulation. In many situations, children wander aimlessly without parents in poverty-stricken areas and some of them die, not even experience how to live. However, if we implement sex education and become more open minded, some of the problems can be easily solved.
We can control the population of the country because the people will become more responsible and knowledgeable. We can avoid the health risk behaviors such as early sexual initiation. Because also of the sex education we can prevent the dating violence and bullying. The youth will develop healthier relationships and we can reduce early pregnancy, HIV and other STD.
In the end, because of the lack of sex education in Philippines many problems occurred. The church’s disapproval of sex education in schools leaves many students curious and unaware of the consequences of unprotected sex. As saying goes “Curiosity kills people”. It is better if we access the sex education also in the Philippines, it will help minimize a number of unfavorable outcomes, such as those mentioned above. It can help in these individuals to be more understanding and aware of the effects of sex. Because of this, individuals would be able to make better decisions that can lead to a more stable country where the high birth rates and rampant poverty can be more controlled.
